SNAPSHOT:

After missing a portion of 2022 due to injury, Meg Robertson returned in a big way for the Dandenong Stingrays, providing a crucial inside presence through the midfield. Her natural footy IQ combined with her clean hands made her a constant throughout the Talent League season and national carnival and put her name up in lights to be drafted.

STRENGTHS:

+ Contested work
+ Clean hands
+ Speed
+ Work rate
+ Versatility
+ Footy IQ

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Composure
- Conversion

PROFILE:

Robertson worked well in tandem with Mikayla Williamson, as her AFLW Academy teammate rotated in similar roles across the field. The contested ball-winner was particularly influential through the middle and then spent time inside 50 where she was able to hit the scoreboard on a number of occasions. Even when not resting, Robertson was good at pushing forward and finding space to be able to have shots on goal.

There are a number of elements that standout about Robertson's game, with her footy IQ being the top aspect of her game. She reads the play well off taps, gets to the right spaces and can win the ball inside or outside. Naturally better at the coalface where she can scoop it up or receive the handball, Robertson has a knack for also getting repeat possessions as she runs hard in transition.

On more than a few occasions, Robertson would deliver the ball to half-forward to a leading target, then dart inside 50 and win another touch leading out all alone. Her goalkicking accuracy that came after that was still an area to work on though, as she did leave quite a few goals out on the park when she had her opportunities.

Still, six goals in 12 games playing primarily as an inside midfielder is not a bad haul at all, though no doubt converting some of those eight behinds and a number of misses would have helped immensely. That ability to get into those goalscoring positions will impress clubs and is why she could end up being a surprise packet in the earlier rounds of this year's AFLW Draft.

Aside from her goalkicking accuracy, ironing out her composure with speed on the ball and under pressure is another area for improvement. When in space with time on her side, Robertson can be a lovely user by foot and hit those drilling low balls. But like many of her peers, when under pressure, the Stingrays midfielder is prone to just getting the ball forward at all costs, and rushing which with that more composure would lift her efficiency further.

Despite those elements in her game that could further improve, Robertson is a smart player with plenty of upside, and clubs know that she could start as a forward and develop into a midfielder. Though a contested ball winner with clean hands, her speed allows her to have a point of difference, and she can find her fair share o the all, including a 33-disposal, seven-mark and two-goal game against Bendigo Pioneers in Round 9.

Going forward, Robertson has plenty of traits that can easily translate to the next level, and she will have no shortage of fans from recruiting circles. Though there are areas to tidy up from a final execution point of view, she has the smarts and the athletic capacity to develop in an elite environment.

SUMMARY:

Meg Robertson could go anywhere from the early second round to mid-draft depending on club preferences. That balance of natural football IQ and speed will help her going forward, and although she has somewhat flown under the radar, remains a highly regarded prospect at the Stingrays.
