Recap
Pat Gheller’s scouting notes:
Oakleigh Chargers
#7 Taylin Duman: Lovely step around two players followed by great kick into the forward 50. Looks to be able to use it well on either side. Two pinpoint passes in two minutes inside 50 one on the left one on the right.
#11 Pat Kerr: Good finish and chase. Finishing still needs to improve. Leads and presents well, hands terrific. Quieter 2nd, follow ups good but still need some work. Great contested grab standing at the front of the pack, much better finish. Lace out pass in congestion, ground work has improved. Leads up at the ball so well, more of a key forward than Battle, probably not as athletically gifted, but a more genuine key forward. Work inside 50 can’t go unheralded, competed all day and set up a few team mates.
#18 Sam McLarty: Good intercept early, pretty composed. Reads the play well. Strong body. Good desperation to clear from defence, looks a solid key back option. Good attack off backline. Uses his big body to often be a presence around the ball. Played on Battle all day and was very impressive on him.
#28 Josh Daicos: Quiet game didn’t find much of the ball other than his goal before the 3/4 time siren.
#35 Jack Higgins: Very very good in an under. Strong in the contests. Good desperation to get hands out, hard worker. Great mark waiting under the ball, made to earn it and got rewarded with 50.
Dandenong Stingrays:
#4 Reece Piper: Powerful kick, powerful body, good user taking the kickouts. Spun out of trouble well. Very composed with good use out of defence. Looks to be able to perform a shut down role whilst giving good use in the back half.
#13 Tom Jok: Great contested mark, leap excellent. Great attack taking on a few at half forward, stronger than he looks with the ball. Has it on a string in the 4th using it well, huge reason for why they won, still went missing at times though.
#15 Sam Fowler: Good turn of foot, evasive, classic small forward. Definitely knows where the goals are not unlike Stephen Milne.
#17 Josh Battle: Good hands in the pack, followed by terrific fly for a contested mark. Seems a good finisher, not sure he is a true key forward though, didn’t have the presence I expected even in the last quarter when they were well on top. 2nd/3rd tall at AFL level.
