SNAPSHOT: “A smooth-moving utility who has elite defensive pressure to match her aerial prowess, Prosser-Shaw could be one to watch at the elite level based off her foundational traits.”

Amelie Prosser-Shaw stands at 175cm and has played in defence, on a wing and through the middle to justify here being one of the top NSW-ACT prospects this year. The only player from her state who earned an AFLW National Draft Combine outside the two AFLW Academy members in Ash Patton and Emma Juneja, Prosser-Shaw has a bevy of fascinating traits that clubs will love.

Prosser-Shaw started her football journey at Baulkham Hills Hawks before moving onto the East Coast Eagles in the AFL Sydney competition. A powerhouse over the last few seasons, Prosser-Shaw played in her side’s premiership-winning performance this year. The Eagles successfully won their third straight flag, with Prosser-Shaw winning her second straight premiership medallion.

The talented utility was known for kicking plenty of goals from a very young age, In the Under 12 Youth Girls back in 2018, Prosser-Shaw slammed home 59 goals in 18 games, before a year later kicking 67 across 24, while playing seven games in the Under 15s as a 12-year-old.

Due to the global pandemic action was more scarce the next two seasons, but Prosser-Shaw still slotted 38 goals across 14 games and even got two Under 18s matches at just 14 years of age. Leading into her double bottom-age season, Prosser-Shaw had kicked 164 goals at 2.9 per game throughout the 2018-2021 seasons.

It came as no surprise that she would be picked up by the Giants Academy, representing them in teh National Development Championships, while playing in a Division One Grand Final and making her Premier Division debut in the AFL Sydney. The rest of her junior career was an upwards trajectory, playing through the Coates Talent League Girls competition and representing the Allies.

Over the journey she transitioned from being a goalkicking machine at junior level, to being a rebounding defender. Then from there, onto a wing and eventually inside, showing her stoppage craft as well. That versatility will hold her in good stead for the future.

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

STRENGTHS:

+ Athleticism
+ Speed-endurance mix
+ Aerial ability
+ Versatility
+ Defensive pressure
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking precision
- Consistency

PROFILE:

With Amelie Prosser-Shaw the elements that set her apart from a lot of other similar players are her ability to be just as effective in the air as at ground level, applying enormous amounts of defensive pressure while taking some big grabs. Her marking is a clear strength and having had the experience up front, down back and on a wing, she is familiar with all parts of the ground and reading the play.

Her high level of speed and endurance - clocking a 3.28-second 20m sprint and 7:55 2km time trial - help her cover the ground for a long time and at a fast speed. She will always compete in teh air, and you could add competitiveness as a major trait for the top-ager. That, along with her defensive pressure will ensure she wraps up opponents on the deck and can create turnovers through her pressure.

For the Giants Academy in 2024, Prosser-Shaw averaged 7.3 tackles from 18.7 disposals and 4.0 marks. Spending time around the clearances and on the outside, she won 3.3 for the three-game stint, while also having similar numbers for her rebounds. Her kicking efficiency - though penetrating and capable of being used on both sides of her body - let her down at times, though is an area that can be further improved going forward.

Her technique kicking looks efficient, it is just about the precision of hitting the targets more so than kicking to space with her penetrating boot. When she stepped up to VFLW level for the GWS Giants, Prosser-Shaw looked impressive off a wing, kicking a goal as well and more than at home against senior opponents. It shouldn't come as a surprise given her experience through the AFL Sydney, but the Giants young gun assimilated perfectly.

While that precision as well as her consistency can improve, the latter is also the result of being utilised in so many different roles. Her national carnival was solid without being outstanding, and being in a side that copped two big losses also made it tricky for Prosser-Shaw to get her hands on the ball consistently. However she always puts in the four-quarter effort, and that speed-endurance mix with her defensive pressure stands out late in games.

The other element that is naturally discussed with Prosser-Shaw is her upside. At 175cm with her athletic traits and versatility, the Giants Academy member has the scope to go far further with her football. She could end up in any number of roles, but should be able to adapt to whichever one ends up being the chosen one at her club. Expect her to be a big improver once reaching the elite level, having already shown signs in her top-age year of building on her past seasons.

DRAFT RANGE: 25-50

SUMMARY:

Amelie Prosser-Shaw is a really valuable mid-draft option with room for upside, but also having the readymade traits to have an impact now as she did at VFLW level. A member of the Giants Academy, expect GWS to take a real close look at her, but no doubt other AFLW clubs will be sniffing around to see if they can add an athletic tall utility to their list.
