SNAPSHOT: “A highly skilled utility who cracked into Vic Metro’s side this season off the back of some strong early season form.”

Amy Smith settled into the wing role for Sandringham Dragons after playing a variety of positions including defence for Vic Metro, with a host of outside and footballing traits standing out in her game. While still having plenty to work on – around the physicality and contested elements – Smith earned a State Draft Combine invite to remain in contention to be drafted.

Smith’s journey began out at Mordialloc Braeside back in 2017 and she played 59 games across her first four seasons – which included a year out due to the global pandemic – before represented the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL) for interleague. She impressed in both matches, and began planting the seeds for an impressive junior career.

By 2022, Smith was playing in the Under 16s Division 3, but stepped up to Division 2 for four matches, while also getting a couple of games at Under 18s level despite only being 14. At the start of her double bottom-age season, Smith funnelled into the Sandringham Dragons’ Futures squad, named among the best in both games and therefore secured her place in Vic Metro’s National Development Championships’ side.

Following that, she returned back to Mordialloc Braeside, before making her Sandringham Coates Talent League Girls debut in Round 9 of that season, playing six matches and averaging 9.8 disposals, 2.8 marks and 2.0 tackles. Injury impacted her bottom-age campaign, restricting Smith to just six games and a lower output overall.

It meant Smith hit a roadblock on her journey, missing out on Vic Metro’s summer hub leading into the 2025 season. Despite the setback, she started the season well, and played a mix of positions including midfield and forward, before finding her place on a wing. Her form throughout the season earned her a call-up to the ‘Big V’ where she actually played in defence. While not having huge numbers, the Dragons top-ager still showed her wares, averaging 8.5 disposals, 2.5 marks and 2.3 tackles.

At Talent League level, Smith finished with numbers of 13.5 disposals, 2.9 marks, 2.3 tackles and 2.2 inside 50s. Her disposal efficiency in particular of 59.3 per cent by foot and 68.5 per cent by hand impressed, ranking second at the Dragons for more anyone with three or more games. Though she has some clear deficiencies in her profile, Smith showed more than enough to earn a deserving State Draft Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:

+ Kicking
+ Vision
+ Footy IQ
+ Outside game
+ Versatility
+ Overhead marking
+ Clean hands

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Physicality
- Defensive pressure
- Contested game

First and foremost, Smith's skills are up there with the best going around, particularly by foot. She wins the ball and can execute well in any third of the ground, utilising some footy smarts and vision to pick out and find targets downfield. Her ability to get into space and be an option is also very good, and playing in that wing role aids in exemplifying her best traits.

Smith's outside game is where she shines. Though the Dragons top-ager has spent time on-ball, her skills are most damaging with time and space, so she was sent to defence for Vic Metro and eventually the wing for Sandringham, where others could feed her the ball and she goes to work. The ability to be that distributor going inside 50 is always important, which is why she initially spent time at half-forward, and did hit the scoreboard with five goals this season.

Overhead, Smith is comfortable, albeit in an uncontested setting. She stands at 173cm, so is a good height for a winger as well, and is the reason she was trialled through that inside role. Her areas of improvement are all related to being an inside midfielder however, which is why Smith is best suited as an option in transition, particularly between the arcs where she can get-and-go, driving the ball forward.

On her improvements, Smith's big one is her physicality. Despite being 173cm, she does not quite have the same strength or physical nature that some others have, and therefore her contested game is not as strong as her uncontested one. She loves to run, can find space so easily, and then utilise her elite skills in transition.

On top of that, Smith's defensive pressure - such as running defensively on turnover or being able to stick tackles - can also further improve. At the national championships, by playing in a defensive role, Smith was able to see the game from behind the play rather than in front of it, and she was able to mop up and send the ball inside 50.

That lead to her defensive running improving upon return to the Dragons, with the smart wing able to learn more about her positioning in the defensive 50, winning a lot of intercept possessions deep in the backline. Given her clean hands both overhead and ground level, she can certainly win the ball around the ground, and while athletically she is solid, her best work is done once the ball is in her hands.

Put simply, Smith is an elite user of the footy, she can spot targets around the ground and hit them up with precision. She does not mind to run-and-carry and is capable of getting involved in transition, while ducking out to wide spaces where she can be a target then delivering the ball forward effectively. Smith does have some key improvements to make in her game, but has those strengths that hold her in good stead.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

SUMMARY:

Amy Smith is a talented outside ball-winner who has some sizzling skills and nice smarts when playing in a range of outside roles, mainly wing or as she did at Metro, defence. Smith needs to further develop more of her contested attributes to have an impact against senior bodies, can certainly have an impact with ball in hand at any level.
