SNAPSHOT: “An all-round athlete whose progression rose significantly in 2025 for the Eastern Ranges and Vic Metro.”
Asher Fearn-Wannan is a multi-sport talent who is one of the best overall athletes in the AFLW Draft. The hard-running Eastern winger started her football journey at Whitehorse before moving to Blackburn last season, and worked her way through the Ranges’ pathway.
In her Under 16s season, Fearn-Wannan played two games for the Futures and then cracked in for a couple of games at Coates Talent League level, where she could show glimpses of the player she could become. Having also played hockey at a high level, and domestic basketball as well, Fearn-Wannan was able to apply plenty of attributes from competing in those sports to her profile.
When 2024 rolled around, Fearn-Wannan was focused on her football, where she not only played 14 games for the Ranges en route to a grand final appearance, but also for her school, Donvale Christian College in the Herald Sun Shield Division 2 Senior Girls competition.
As a bottom-ager, Fearn-Wannan was thrown around from half-back to the wing and even through the ruck, with the latter two roles being the ones she would fulfill in 2025. An eye-catching year in 2024 earned her Vic Metro hub honours, and she continued that trajectory by being selected in Metro’s AFLW Under 18 Championships squad.
A permanent fixture on the wing for the Ranges in 2025, Fearn-Wannan played 14 games and averaged 12.9 disposals, 1.9 marks, 2.2 tackles and 4.1 inside 50s, while pinch-hitting in the ruck for 3.8 hitouts per match. At 177cm and boasting an enormous leap, Fearn-Wannan can be that secondary ruck at the top level, though her speed and running capacity is perfectly suited to the wing.
At the national carnival, Fearn-Wannan played three games – a late out for one – and managed 10.7 disposals, as well as 1.7 marks, 3.0 inside 50s and 2.0 rebound 50s running hard off a wing for the ‘Big V’. Winning at flag with the Ranges, Fearn-Wannan’s year was complete with a National Draft Combine invitation where she dominated to post the highest physical performance rating (PPR) at the event.

STRENGTHS:

+ Explosive speed
+ Run and carry
+ Versatility
+ Two-way running
+ Outside game
+ Impact-per-possession
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Fundamentals
- Production
When talking about Fearn-Wannan's profile, the first thing that comes to mind without a doubt is athleticism. It is not unreasonable to suggest the Ranges runner is the best all-round athlete in the draft class, and the testing results showed that with a PPR of 92.2. She finished top 10 in each of the indoor physical tests and still performed strongly in the 2km time trial as well which came as no surprise.
Fearn-Wannan's agility was the best of her efforts, clocking a blistering 8.3 seconds to be the fastest player through the course at the Draft Combine. She shows her evasiveness out on the field with her run-and-carry and while some players are more straight line runners, the athletic tall is more than capable of changing direction on a dime.
That agility, along with her explosive speed (3.227-second 20m sprint) gives her opponents all sorts of headaches. She can move like the wind, and at 177cm, usually towers over most other wingers. Once the ball hits the deck, she is off and hard to contain because her first few steps are lightning and she can quickly put metres on an opponent if they are caught flat-footed.
Her other point of difference with her athleticism is her ability to run both ways. Having started at Eastern as a rebounding tall defender, she understands the defensive concepts, and gets back to help out. Fortunately being in a side as strong as the Ranges, she can be aggressive as a winger, and push forward to set up scoring chances for her teammates. When the turnover occurs, she can still be there a kick behind play to send it straight back.
Her outside game as a whole is very impressive, and while she is that dominant outside type, she still maintained a fairly high contested possession rate of 42.2 per cent, incredibly at both Coates Talent League and AFLW Under 18 Championships level. All in all, that combination of athletic weapons help her to be a really eye-catching outside player who can still find her own ball.
Possibly one exciting element is that Fearn-Wannan still has plenty to develop. She has shown marked improvements in some of her fundamental areas, and while there is still work to be done - such as her aerial and kicking - they have improved over the last two years to be really solid and not a liability like some pure athletes.
Naturally they can get better, with her groundballs another area that Fearn-Wannan targeted this year, and it was clear from some of her performances in 2025 that she was able to be cleaner off the deck. While she does get into space and is utilised as an option, naturally she can lift her production rate a little more which will come with further fundamental improvement.
Fearn-Wannan might only have 10-13 touches per game, but quite often you remember eight to 10 of them because they usually will come with some sort of metres gained. She is a high running talent and that enables her to not only be noticed, but break open the game. Her high impact-per-possession rate is arguably the biggest improvement across the last 12 months as she went from intercepting and clearing to really backing herself and pushing hard offensively.
DRAFT RANGE: 20-40
SUMMARY:
Asher Fearn-Wannan has the combination of size and athleticism that clubs love to build on, and her rate of development over the last two years has been very exciting. Really honing down on that wing role, Fearn-Wannan is a player who would have a large draft range, with some similar athletes taken in the first round. That would not be a surprise, but expect her to be no later than that second round/early third round region.
