SNAPSHOT: “A high-volume ball-winner who can dominate across multiple positions and just about do it all.”
Chloe Baker-West might be the highest production player in the entire AFLW Draft crop. The Calder Cannons talent has struggled with injury interruptions the last two years, but has enough runs on the board – and flashes of brilliance when she has played – to suggest she will be a very good player for a very long time.
Baker-West began her football journey through the Essendon District Football League (EDFL) with Strathmore, playing 15 games way back in 2015. By her second season she was already stepping up to half a dozen games in the Under 15s competition at just nine years-old. While for most of the next few years she stuck within her age group, Baker-West continued to shine and looked that special player for the future.
After not playing in 2020 due to the global pandemic, Baker-West returned to Strathmore for the Under 14s competition, playing 11 games and booting two goals. Interleague action followed the next season, as well as representing Vic Metro as a bottom-ager in the National Development Championships. There, Baker-West won the first of two MVPs as the level, while also making her Coates Talent League Girls debut at 15.
Another seven games with Calder and a second Vic Metro MVP at Under 16s level followed in 2023 as Baker-West had already played just about every line there was to play on the field, named in the best almost every game. At 16 years of age, Baker-West put up numbers of 31.4 disposals, 2.0 marks, 6.7 tackles, 5.1 inside 50s and 5.1 rebound 50s in a remarkable season of consistency.
It looked at that stage like she might build the biggest accolade-filled CV of all-time before injury struck. She played just two Coates Talent League Girls games in 2024 – and no national championships – as she juggled some school football and then injury which ruled her out of the rest of the season.
Entering 2025, Baker-West did manage to get a good run at it to start with, and even got to represent the National Academy, but at the opening centre bounce of Vic Metro’s second AFLW Under 18 Championships clash, the Calder star went down with a head knock and was missed the rest of the carnival without actually winning a disposal.
It was a bitter blow for such a talented player who did return to play Calder’s last game of the season against the Northern Knights, but was still restricted to the nine games. While not able to show her wares, Baker-West has more than proven herself over the last few years to still be among the better prospects in this year’s AFLW Draft crop.

STRENGTHS:
+ Production
+ Versatility
+ Reading the play
+ Footy IQ
+ Kicking
+ Vision
+ One-on-ones
+ Defensive pressure
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Composure
- Explosive speed
- Continuity
Baker-West really has it all when it comes to her game. The durability over the last two seasons will be a little bit of a question mark, but she has still managed to get out and show what she can do when on the park as she did in nine Talent League games this season. What you get with Baker-West is sublime footy IQ, sheer ball-winning ability and a knack to cover the ground with ease, winning possession after possession, even in the same chain.
While Baker-West may not have explosive speed, she still cruises around the field effectively and is certainly not slow. She can separate herself from opponents by darting or weaving, and also shrugging would-be tacklers with great strength through the hips. That same strength extends overhead where she, pound-for-pound would be among the best contested marks.
Though she is only 165cm, she can jump and clunk consistently and her ridiculous numbers suggest just that. An average of 5.8 marks in 2025, of which more than one per game is contested, shows her aerial prowess, but she is just as competitive at ground level. Her defensive pressure has always been brilliant for a player who wins the ball so much, and while some of her huge disposal tallies can be attributed to getting into loose space and racking them up, she does the hard running as well to compete at every stoppage.
Looking at her disposal, her kicking with any time or space is a delight and she can hit short, sharp passes, on the 45 or find a target long down the line with superior vision. The knock on that element of her game is her composure around stoppages as by her own admission she can tend to "bomb it" when under pressure. That is linked to her lack of explosiveness which she was hoping to develop over time.
From a football perspective, Baker-West has great IQ and by reading the play, is able to get back when needed, then surge forward if required. She finds her possessions in all manner of ways, and while she does not kick a heap of goals, has played as a forward in her younger years, booting five goals from seven games in 2023.
Ultimately with Baker-West, clubs know what they are getting, even if they have not seen much of it the last two seasons. She can use both sides of her body if required, has no issues getting to the right spots winning the ball, can impact on all three lines and fill any hole required. While a little smaller than the modern day taller midfielders, she competes above her size and is still taller than a number of midfielders at AFLW level.
Expect her to land somewhere in the first round given her accolades and potential, with too much upside and potential with her to stray much beyond the top 10, and she could very easily be inside it as well.
DRAFT RANGE: 5-15
SUMMARY:
Chloe Baker-West is a natural accumulator who continually racks up ridiculous numbers in any team she plays. The Calder Cannons and Vic Metro star is one who clubs have kept a close eye on over the years since she burst onto the Talent League scene as a 15-year-old. Most fascinatingly is where clubs see her best position going forward, and if she rolls into a hybrid role to begin with at the next level.
