SNAPSHOT: “Boasting some of the safest and strongest hands in the AFLW Draft crop, Mahony is a courageous tall who has an outstanding kick and enormous courage when flying for her marks.”

Claire Mahony wasted no time when bursting onto the scene with the GWV Rebels last year, quickly establishing herself as an eye-catching key forward. Hailing from a sheep farm on the outskirts of Beaufort in Western Victoria, Mahony had a first season to remembers, averaging 4.5 marks and booting eight goals from 11 games.

Mahony is one who has constantly challenged herself to rise to the level each time she has found a new challenge. She switched football clubs from Beaufort to Lake Wendouree in Ballarat which gave her first-hand access to the talent in the city. The then Under 16s prospect balanced her time between her age group and Under 18s in 2022, and was named among the best in 14 of her 17 games.

That was enough to catch the attention of Rebels recruiters who added her to the Coates Talent League Girls program ahead of the 2023 season. Like so many in her age bracket, her junior football was impacted by Covid, and while juggling her footy for both school and club, she added another feather in her cap by making the Rebels squad.

Despite running out for the Under 17s Futures squad, Mahony was overlooked for the AFLW Academy, but showed early season that she is clearly one of the top prospects outside that squad. Limited opportunities inside 50 made life difficult for Mahony inside 50, though she still booted nine goals in her first seven games.

However after being pidgeonholed as a key forward and lacking opportunities, Mahony was moved into defence and even on a wing at times to show off her work rate and aerial ability behind the ball. She played a similar marking role, clunking anything that came her way and flew with reckless abandonment. Though her scoring dried up – only kicking one goal in her final five games – Mahony spent most of her time in defence where she instead saved goals rather than kicking them.

Mahony then stepped up for Vic Country, kicking a couple of goals and averaging 8.7 disposals and 4.3 marks in a Vic Country squad that only won one game from three chances, but provided the key position talent with a few more opportunities.

PLAYER HIGHLIGHTS:

+ Positioning
+ Impact-per-possession

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Ground balls
- Consistency

PROFILE:

Without a doubt, the crux of Claire Mahony's game centres around her marking. Often it does not matter if one or two defenders apply pressure or are hanging off her, Mahony is able to clunk some huge grabs and then turn around and hit targets by foot. At 181cm, Mahony is the perfect height for a key position player, and showed in her side's Round 1 loss against Geelong Falcons how good she could be booting 2.2 from 17 touches and seven marks.

Mahony is not an overly athletic forward outside of her aerial ability, but is still mobile and it does not affect her football. She uses it well by hand or foot going forward, and sometimes is too courageous for her own good. She will jump for hangars or go back with courage to try and pull down a big grab, not too dissimilar to the way Jonathon Brown did two decades ago.

The thing with Mahony is her marking is not all that defines her as she is a lovely field kick, both over short and long distances. Still growing into her frame, Mahony has a way to go in many regards, but her skills match her aerial prowess, and that helps add another string to her bow. The GWV Rebels tall's impact-per-possession is incredibly high, and often even 10-12 touches is enough for Mahony to have made a profound impact on the game.

While her hands are safe as houses, Mahony does a lot of the work with her positioning be it on the lead or one-on-one, and is able to get her hands to the ball or a position where she can make an attempt at it. She is never going to be a consistent 20-plus disposal player, but can turn a game with some vital contested marks down the line.

At the elite level, contested marking is ultra-valuable and with a booming kick - that is more accurate than inaccurate - Mahony already has the hallmarks of a future key forward at the top level. Her consistency can be a question mark given her lack of opportunities at times - though she can float in and out of games and her accuracy can also be a confidence thing - but when she is on, she is hard to stop.

The other element she is continuing to work on is being cleaner at ground level and impacting in that way. She rarely drops a mark so in a contest there is less chance of needing to impact in a secondary way, but on the deck she will scrap hard to win it. Adding more impact with every touch at groundlevel will help add yet another string to her bow.

DRAFT RANGE: 15-30

SUMMARY:

Claire Mahony looms as an intriguing prospect in terms of AFLW Draft calculations. She has a wide draft range due to her current traits, and then just how far clubs believe she can go. Few players have her marking capabilities, and with upside still to come, she could very well earn a spot on a list through a first round pick. However the depth of the draft might see her land in the second round, but either way she is a prospect who can make a splash in the future.
