Courtney Zappara had a breakout year for Swan Districts, storming to the top of the goalkicking charts in the WAFL Women's competition and only just being pipped at the end by Adele Arnup. A pure goalkicking forward, Zappara had some massive games including a six-goal haul against West Perth and an inaccurate 4.5 against East Fremantle. Her consistency wavered in the second half of the season, but her natural football talent is undeniable.
Critically, Zappara is still only 21 with a long career ahead of her. Though she could improve the defensive elements of her game - which is the one main deficiency - her offensive hurt factor is high. Her footy IQ and goal sense are outstanding, and with more time to further develop, she could become a really dangerous medium forward at the top level.
In 2023, Zappara kicked 23 goals in 14 games and showed enough to suggest her traits are transferable to the elite stage. She is largely that offensive forward who does all the damage on the scoreboard, but defensive elements to her game can come with time, which will be a focus going forward.
