Summary

SNAPSHOT: “An outstanding all-round athlete, Gilbey has an exciting outside game as a wing/half-forward.”
Ella Gilbey is a fantastic athlete who has much improvement to come in her game, but caught the eye with a number of blistering runs in 2025. The Claremont prospect built on a 50/50 split between WAFLW and Rogers Cup action from last year, with a permanent spot in the former in 2025. She played 12 games, averaging 10.3 disposals and booting 11.10 across the course of the season.
Gilbey plied her trade as a forward for the Tigers, but showed she could also play up on a wing, and in 2024, played seven games of Rogers Cup and six of WAFLW, the natural progression after 21 games in two seasons for the Tigers’ juniors from 2022-23. She kicked three goals in that time, and when 2025 rolled around, had booted eight across her three seasons.
Prior to that, Gilbey had played for West Coast Junior Football Club in the Metro North region, before naturally funnelling into Claremont’s program. The explosive youngster has been a late bloomer of sorts, named for the Sandgropers as a bottom-ager, but cracking into the side in 2025 as a top-ager playing all four games at the national carnival.
There, she averaged 11.3 disposals, 2.5 marks and 1.8 inside 50s, and while not able to hit the scoreboard, had some nice moments as that high half-forward working up the ground. At the end of the season, the West Australian picked up a State Draft Combine invitation where she clocked a record 60cm vertical jump, the most of any player across any of the Combines.

STRENGTHS:
+ Athleticism
+ Explosive speed
+ Evasion
+ Clean hands
+ Defensive pressure
+ Upside
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Strength
- Contested game
- Kicking efficiency
An elite athletic profile underpins Gilbey's game, with the Claremont top-ager well-rounded across the board in that area. Boasting the best vertical jump (60cm) of any player at the Draft Combines, she also has explosive speed and great agility that helps her evade would-be tacklers and create her own space down the ground.
Gilbey hurt herself in the 20m sprint at the State Draft Combine, so did not complete the agility test or 2km time trial, but what she showed in the vertical jumps, agility and sprint saw her record a physical performance rating (PPR) or 91.7. That score - which is measured out of 100 - was the second best behind Asher Fearn-Wannan at the Draft Combines.
On-field, she shows that athletic base whether she is playing as a forward or wing, with that high half-forward role seemingly a good spot for Gilbey. Her most damaging trait is that ability to win the ball and then explode past an opponent to get goalside or direct a kick to space in front of her where she can burn off anyone in chase and run towards the big sticks.
Her final execution by foot is an area to improve, with her kicking efficiency down compared to others in the same role. That is largely due to the fact she is often disposing of the ball at a high speed, so it is either rushed or with an awkward ball drop compared to when she has the time and space. With the time and space she is more efficient, and what she does via hand is great.
Gilbey's ability to be clean at ground level enables her to win the ball quickly and breakaway from would-be tacklers, particularly in space or when a loose ball was there for the taking. It is particularly valuable when the general forward is inside 50, reading it off hands and swooping on it to impact the scoreboard or set up a teammate in a better position.
While her hands are clean and she is quick to react, the next way that Gilbey can develop that area is by gaining greater strength and being able to compete one-on-one more effectively. As it stands, she is lighter compared to most of the opponents she comes up against, and while quicker and nimbler, she is less likely to win many one-on-ones.
With extra preseasons under her belt and work into that area, her strength and ability to win more of those contests will increase and it will add an extra layer to her game. However her strengths are suited to an outside game and she is more than likely destined to remain as that half-forward/wing.
DRAFT RANGE: Late
SUMMARY:
Ella Gilbey is a high-upside, elite athlete who has plenty of potential for the future. She is a player who has a chance to be drafted, or if not this year, then in the coming years once she has further developed. If picked up, she will likely be later on in the draft, but will be a name to remember in the future regardless of the level she plays.
