PROFILE:

Ellie Veerhuis was a story to remember in 2024, catching the eye as a rebounding defender for the Sydney Swans Academy, and looking to play a similar role for the Allies at the AFLW Under 18 National Championships. However after a couple of injuries to key midfielders, Veerhuis stepped into the inside group and shone, providing some great speed out of the stoppage and in transition going forward.

While not the biggest of frames and needing to improve her strength, Veerhuis does attack the ball hard and will have a high level of defensive pressure to force turnovers and lay big tackles. Her run-and-carry down the ground is what stands out and catches the eye, and the fact she has spent time on both the outside and inside helps too.

If she can further develop her endurance which is another area of improvement, Veerhuis will be able to compete for longer, Her upside is evident and that speed she possesses will take her far. No doubt she is one who could be a valuable long-term addition for an AFLW club, given how far she has come in her top-age year, deservedly earning an AFLW State Draft Combine invite.
