SNAPSHOT: “Sydney Swans Academy’s top AFLW Draft prospect for 2024, Juneja is a hard-running wing with a point of difference aerial game that helps her compete in a wide variety of situations across the field.”

Emma Juneja is an exciting AFLW Draft prospect out of New South Wales and in particular the Sydney Swans Academy. Playing off a wing in 2024, Juneja lived up to expectations that came with being the Swans’ sole AFLW Academy member, going to another level to really catch the eye both through the Coates Talent League Girls competition and AFLW Under 18 National Championships.

Juneja’s journey started at age 11 where she ran out for the East Sydney Bulldogs and quickly loving the sport and the head coach at the time, she was accelerated through the pathway to be involved with the Sydney Swans Academy not long after. Eventually she would come through the Future and then Under 18s program, running out for the red and white in the Coates Talent League the past couple of seasons.

At senior level, Juneja would represent Sydney University – a club she moved to over the off-season – and helped contribute to the Students’ rise into the finals series. There, Sydney Uni came from fifth spot to reach a preliminary final and show exactly the kind of talent that was at the club, and Juneja was a rising star in the side.

The wing enjoys the role even if it can be tricky at times, because she can have a view of the whole ground and work out her positioning from there. In addition, her role was even more vital when it came to the Allies – who met two days prior to their first clash with Vic Metro – as Juneja had to work overtime to maintain structure and get back to help the defence in what would be a heavy loss.

By the end of the season, Juneja had performed strongly across multiple levels for a number of teams, and even had a VFLW match for the Swans against Collingwood in Round 7. After lifting her averages for the Swans Academy and Allies this year, Juneja fully put her name forward as a strong draft candidate, not just for the Swans, but across the nation.

PROFILE:

Emma Juneja's key point of difference for her role comes in her aerial ability. Measuring 169cm at the recent National AFLW Draft Combine, Juneja competes far better in the air than a player of her size might. While wings are known to take a lot of uncontested marks, Juneja can cop contact and still clunk grabs, or use smarts to position herself early and maximise the time to take the grab unimpeded.

Once Juneja has taken the mark, she loves to play on and step around the opposition, which she did just about every time in the Coates Talent League if given the chance. Her step to the left, then swing straight back onto the right to burst away was a rinse and repeat, but it kept working. Even though her testing data did not jump off the page at the draft combine, her on-field athletic attributes are far better.

In a game setting, Juneja can reach a handy top speed, but is more about her ability to wrong-step an opponent to give herself more time, and then she will tuck the ball under the arm and take off to gain serious metres down the ground. While fully an outside player, she did lurk around the stoppages at times, ready for a second or third possession win where she could use her athleticism and smarts to full advantage.

Her areas of improvement are pretty simple. As an outside player who loves to run and gun, Juneja could further develop her inside craft, with not a great deal of time spent around the stoppages. Given her work rate and ability to cover the ground, Juneja is unlikely to be that inside midfielder as she does the outside role so well. However it is still an area that can further develop, as could her strength.

Identifying her strength and tackling pressure as deficiencies in her game that could further improve, Juneja prides herself on her two-way running. More than a few times she would work back from the middle and find herself intercepting in the goalsquare. In a number of highlights throughout the national carnival, the ball is in midfield heading towards the defensive 50, and Juneja will dash past the camera and shortly after be deep in defence to intercept or mop up.

The New South Wales talent has really taken her game to another level in 2024, with her marking and consistency further cementing her case as a draftable prospect. An AFLW Academy member who has not put a foot wrong this season, and her traits she has shown at the elite junior level will translate to the top grade without too many issues.

DRAFT RANGE: 20-40

SUMMARY:

Emma Juneja is the perfect second round selection because she has a lot of eye-catching traits, and while still having areas to develop, has enough fundamental strengths that clubs will love to build on. Expect her to gain interest from outside New South Wales, though the Swans Academy would likely be very keen on the hard-running wing.
