Summary
SNAPSHOT: “A skilful and efficient midfielder who makes all the right decisions and accumulates possessions in every part of the ground.”
Ethan Matthews has long been the standout Giants Academy prospect in the 2008-born bracket. What’s more, he has also represented NSW/ACT with aplomb throughout each age group, and took out this year’s Hunter Harrison Medal as the best player in the Academy Series.
He was one of just two bottom-agers to earn an Allies berth last year, slotting in for one game alongside star Queenslander Caylen Murray. In the same season, he broke through for a handful of VFL appearances in Greater Western Sydney colours and went on to be inducted into the 2026 AFL Academy.
Matthews added just one state league appearance to his resume this year having had his top-age campaign cut short by a foot stress fracture. It happened in the midst of the Under 18 National Championships, after he had racked up 35 disposals and 11 clearances in the Allies’ loss to Vic Country.
Before the injury was uncovered in June, Matthews also dominated at Talent League level. In just three appearances, the midfielder averaged a whopping 35.3 disposals, 5.8 clearances, 9.0 inside 50s and nearly three goals per game to provide the ideal runway into further representative duties.
Despite his ties to the Giants as a Western Sydney native, Matthews grew up supporting Collingwood and idolising the likes of Scott Pendlebury. He also emulates the ball use of another recent tradee in Lachie Whitfield, whose departure leaves a suitable role to fill in the long-term.
STRENGTHS:
+ Accumulation
+ Clean hands
+ Decision making
+ Disposal efficiency
+ Running power
+ Scoreboard impact
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Contested game
- Strength
Matthews was enjoying some sort of season before it was cut short of injury. Having graduated from roles along the wing and half-back flank, he began to blossom with high-production games in midfield. Not only was Matthews racking up the numbers, but controlling games on the inside, outside, and the scoreboard.
Central to his accumulation factor is an endless running tank. Matthews gives the impression of being everywhere at once, able to manufacture clean stoppage exits while also running in waves on the outside. He combines speed with endurance to forge combination play in all parts of the ground, bringing the game forward at every opportunity.
Needless to say, his ball use is also key to keeping those chains of possession moving. Matthews is a one-touch player who seldom fumbles at ground level or when marking overhead. He distributes the ball crisply by hand and is potent by foot, able to hit laser-like passes on the move. So not only is he efficient, but also damaging with ball in hand.
Having averaged nine forward-50 entries per Talent League game this year, Matthews is clearly getting the ball in the right areas. While certainly an ideal launch player, he has also added the weapon of scoreboard impact to his arsenal. He kicked goals regularly this season, consistently slotting home from long-range on the run and doing so at key moments.
Another part of what makes Matthews so effective is his decision making. Having idolised Scott Pendlebury growing up, it is no surprise that poise and class are among his most notable traits. He has innate spatial awareness and great vision, seeing the game better than most. To compliment that, he's quick and evasive enough to evade pressure, and incredibly skilful.
While he has successfully graduated from far more outside-leaning roles to become a full-time midfielder, Matthews can still continue to develop his inside game. With senior footy under his belt, he's deceptively tough and physical when required and is filling out his relatively tall frame nicely. Given he is so clean, uses the ball well and can run all day, continuing to elevate that contested game will make him the ultimate all-rounder.
DRAFT RANGE: 5-10
SUMMARY:
GWS has been pining for unrestricted access to the Western Sydney talent pool, albeit unsuccessfully, for some time. That plea has been exacerbated by the rise of Matthews this year, given the likelihood he’ll surpass Tom Green (pick 10, 2019) as the earliest bid for a Giants Academy player. The club is adamant it will do everything possible to secure Matthews, who is a top-10 prospect on merit. Currently holding pick nine, the Giants could be forced to call out Matthews’ name with their own selection if he isn’t bid on before then. Either way, he looks like staying with the orange team but would be happy to play anywhere.
