Port Adelaide may have opted against nominating Harper Montgomery as a father-son candidate, but the North Adelaide prospect has attracted enough interest to earn a state draft combine call-up. The son of 2004 Port premiership player Brett, Harper turned out for the Roosters in 11 SANFL Under 18 games this season, while also showing his wares in a pair of League appearances for Port's reserves.

Stationed mostly off the half-back flank, Montgomery is a strong interceptor at 187cm and averaged 5.5 marks per game. In his crowning performance for the year, he clunked eight grabs for the second week running to go with a season-high 27 disposals and the only three goals to his name. Montgomery is also a good user of the ball, often looking to shift onto his left side and unleash punchy kicks. He went at 80 per cent efficiency in North Adelaide colours, making that part of his game an asset.

For as much as it is a strength, Montgomery's tendency to search for his left side is borderline dependent, even if he seldom sells himself into too much trouble. He's a nice size already and has some potential to expand his game in different roles, with his small League experience somewhat counteracting his lack of representative football this year.
