Summary
SNAPSHOT: “A developing natural ruck who is a presence in the air and clean at ground level.”
Isobella Hishonga-Gibb is a towering 181cm ruck who also spent stints at both ends over the course of the last two seasons. While not a notable ball-winner, her numbers did lift for the Northern Knights in the Coates Talent League, and her left foot became somewhat a weapon, separating herself from other rucks with that ball use.
Hishongwa-Gibb is a relative newcomer to football, instead switching to the code post-global pandemic to play with Brunswick Under 14s in the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL). She played nine games that season, but the following year was where her talent began to shine through. She booted 14 goals in 17 games for Brunswick Under 15s and earned a spot in the YJFL interleague side for the Metro Junior Development Series.
Her performance there earned her a place on the Northern Knights’ Futures squad and though still raw, played both Under 16s matches. She went on to represent Vic Metro in the Diversity All Stars game, and then back at Brunswick played 14 games and booted 18 goals including seven matches of multiple majors.
When her bottom-age season started, Hishongwa-Gibb had locked in her place with the Knights’ Under 18s side and went on to play 14 matches, averaging 7.1 disposals and 16.2 hitouts. While still being raw, she did get a couple of opportunities for Vic Metro given her state’s bottom-age talls were stronger than the top-age ones. While only having four disposals across those contests, she showed her ruck craft with 22 hitouts per game.
A spot in the National Under 17 Girls Futures followed, and Hishongwa-Gibb would again represent Vic Metro at the national championships later in the year, this time upping her disposal averaged to 4.7, but also 3.3 tackles with 21.3 hitouts. At Talent League level, her numbers rose significantly and her season statline of 11.0 disposals, 2.8 marks, 26.3 hitouts, 2.6 tackles and 2.0 inside 50s were very good.
Overall, Hishongwa-Gibb’s couple of seasons showed nice promise and earned her a State Draft Combine with the view of being a long-term ruck prospect at the next level.

STRENGTHS:
+ Ruck craft
+ Aerial ability
+ Contested marking
+ Left-foot kick
+ Competitiveness
+ Clean hands
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Production
- Game sense
- Strength
Hishongwa-Gibb has some real points of difference as a ruck, and while she might lack in other areas compared to her peers, the Knights draft prospect has shown really nice development across the course of the last 18 months. It starts with the most important aspect which is her ruck craft, a skill that the Vic Metro representative does really well.
Whether it is palming the ball down neatly or able to put it to space for teammates, Hishongwa-Gibb's hitout numbers are nothing to sneeze at, and a lot of them are very good. She is 181cm and while her physical testing numbers do not jump off the page, her on-field work at stoppages is very good. She times her jumps well, and is able to craft taps down to her onballers, or force the opposition to shark her.
Around the ground Hishongwa-Gibb does not win a heap of the ball, but what she does do well is take a strong mark and is clean both in the air and at ground level. She presents for the grab, safely takes it, and of all the ruck prospects with Draft Combine invites, she might even be the number one with her contested marking. She clunked 10 contested grabs throughout the Talent League, at almost one per game, while averaging 2.8 total marks.
While she does need to improve her game sense and production, Hishongwa-Gibb has done so from 2024 to 2025 and her numbers have been rewarded. However the real element to her game that sets her aside from other players is her kicking. Her left foot has become somewhat of a weapon, and compared to the other rucks in the class, she clears them fairly comfortably.
Hishongwa-Gibb thinks through her kick and ran at 66.1 per cent by foot through the Talent League despite a 46.6 per cent contested rate, boasting the highest kicking efficiency at her club of players who had played more than three games. Each time you watched her it looked to be getting better, and her numbers reflect that improvement.
Alongside those traits, Hishongwa-Gibb is also a competitor, and will compete both in the air and at ground level, with those aforementioned clean hands. She still needs to further build strength as opponents can use their weight to limited her influence, but she never dies wondering about winning a contest.
From an athletic point of view, her speed and agility are not up with the other rucks, and perhaps another reason she is that rung below in the sense of State Draft Combine compared to National Draft Combine. Though her endurance is very handy, and with the natural footballing traits, she has enough to suggest she could carve out a career.
As a whole, Hishongwa-Gibb has come on in leaps and bounds of late, and has a really nice overall draft profile. She has some points of difference in her contested marking and kicking, and while her game sense and strength can improve, she has made inroads this season. A good value raw talent who can further develop.
DRAFT RANGE: 40-60
SUMMARY:
Isobella Hishongwa-Gibb screams long-term developmental ruck with some damaging traits that have already developed. She might not be the explosive new-age ruck or one who can find the ball 20 times and have six clearances, but what she offers is a safe set of hands, and a rock solid left boot which is very rare for rucks who are still building into their bodies with room for growth.
