SNAPSHOT: “A tall and powerful utility who can play across all three lines and boasts a booming kick.”
Jade McLay’s year might have been cut short due to a shoulder injury in April, but the talented tall has build up a reputation as a powerfully-built player with some massive strengths to her game. A potential first round prospect, McLay’s best position might be unknown, but that versatility adds to the intrigue around her profile.
McLay’s Coates Talent League journey began as a double bottom-ager in 2023 where she played 10 games and caught the eye averaging 15 touches and three marks per game. Already capable of spending time forward, back or in the middle as a tall midfielder or ruck. From there, she progressed through the Calder Cannons, playing a further nine games in 2024.
The Calder Cannons tall always put her body on the line and did have a number of knocks throughout the season where she would come off and either return late in the game or the next week. Unfortunately the most recent knock to her shoulder during the AFLW Academy match put a line through her top-age season after a handful of games, and just two at Coates Talent League Girls level.
While losing the bulk of her top-age season to injury, few will likely forget what McLay offers to a side. A member of a National Academy, McLay at least got a chance to represent Vic Metro at bottom-age level in a match against South Australia, where she had 11 disposals, eight hitouts, two clearances and two tackles, rotating between defence and the ruck.
Outside of on-field accolades, McLay was named Calder Cannons captain at the start of the season, and while she did just play the two matches, was a key voice for a young side that has plenty of up-and-coming talent. That leadership and experience will hold her in good stead for the future.

STRENGTHS:
+ Physicality
+ Size
+ Versatility
+ Penetrating kick
+ Vision
+ Clean hands
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Endurance
- Composure
Striking a formidable figure wherever she plays, McLay is the ultimate tall utility. Her physicality is a key aspect of her profile, standing at 177cm which is a good size to play at either end, but exceptionally advantageous when on-ball. Though she has played in the ruck, McLay is more likely to be that big-bodied midfielder, or a third tall up either end, at the top level.
McLay's footballing traits are what help rise her above many others, with a penetrating right boot that aids in clearing the danger zone, or extracting from stoppages and bombing it forward to put pressure on the opposition defence. With time and space, she can do a lot of damage in transition, and though her composure could tidy up to become more impactful when clearing the ball under pressure, the metres she gains through her kicking automatically makes them effective.
While primarily a kick-first player, McLay's use by hand is an underrated trait that she possesses. If you are watching closely, she is able to loop well-weighted handballs as well as anyone in the draft, and is quick to identify players in space outside the contest. Her delivery by hand is ultra-effective, and sometimes can be just as impactful as a kick.
McLay's gamestyle is a heavily contested one, but she is equally able to impact on the spread. Her bigger frame at ground level enables her to protect the ball and those clean hands and nice vision extracts it from first possession to second. A player who can work to win repeat disposals within a chain, McLay finds the ball with ease as she showed in a blistering, albeit short data span this season where she had 51 disposals across two games, and averaged five clearances and inside 50s from those matches.
In order to take her game to another level, McLay can further build her endurance base which will allow her to impact for longer. She has the smarts to get into the right spots and like any good leader, brings her teammates into the game. While not the most explosive in terms of complete speed, for her size, McLay is still mobile and uses her strength to manoeuvre out of sticky situations.
Going forward, McLay's best position at the top level will vary depending on who you talk to. Big-bodied midfielders are in high demand, so once she further builds her endurance, she could be seen as that onballer who then can play a role on any line, similar to a Ruby Schleicher. While the shoulder injury and little niggles she has picked up over the last 18 months might have seen her draft range widen, there is every chance she lands somewhere between the mid-first round and mid-second round region.
DRAFT RANGE: 15-30
SUMMARY:
Jade McLay is a powerful unit who has natural leadership and is capable of playing across all three lines. While a shoulder injury meant her top-age campaign was reduced to just two and a half games at the sub-elite level, her CV over the last few years has shown she is more than capable of stepping up to the level. It will be fascinating not only to see which club takes her, but also where they deploy her at the top grade. It would not be a shock to see a club pounce early on her given her rarity as a player, but have opted for the cautious draft range given her lack of exposure in 2025. A lock though with her talent.
