Summary
SNAPSHOT: “A remarkably explosive ruck who acts like a fourth midfielder with her ball-winning ability and defensive pressure.”
Josie Bamford is the clear cut top Victorian ruck choice in this year’s AFLW Draft, and one of only a couple of pure rucks who earned National Draft Combine invites. Bamford boasts electrifying speed and great athleticism which helps her impact both offensively and defensively, while having a great understanding of the game.
Bamford’s football journey started out at Bayswater in 2017 having only just been introduced to the code via her sister. Basketball had been a mainstay for Bamford at that point in time, and she also took up Little Athletics where she showcased her high vertical jump and her impressive speed. However they all made way for football a few years ago in order for the Eastern ruck to chase her AFLW dream.
She played 49 games across her first three seasons with Bayswater, before having to sit out 2020 like most of her peers, particularly in Victoria. She returned to the action post-global pandemic in 2021, but this time with Ferntree Gully Eagles in the Eastern Football Netball League (EFNL). That season Bamford played 13 games across Under 14s and Under 16s, before representing her league a year later in the Under 15s Junior Development Series.
When 2023 came around, Bamford got a taste of Coates Talent League Girls action through the futures, playing with the Ranges before representing Vic Metro. Though not able to crack in for an Under 18s debut, that would come the following season. Bamford played 15 games and averaged 12.3 disposals, 23.2 hitouts and 4.4 tackles locking down a ruck spot.
She also got the opportunity to run out for the ‘Big V’ as a bottom-ager, playing all three games and averaging 11.3 disposals, 16.3 hitouts and 4.0 tackles in that carnival. She maintained those numbers for Metro in 2025, but also kicked a couple of goals as her transition to be a key forward alongside her ruck role blossomed.
At Eastern in particular, Bamford’s presence inside 50 and ability to hit the scoreboard really stepped up as she booted 10 goals across her 13 games, while retaining her 23 hitouts per game average. She still laid 4.5 tackles per match, and had more than two clearances per game in the process from her 15.2 disposals. An impressive season, Bamford earned a National Draft Combine invitation at the conclusion of the year.

STRENGTHS:
+ Vertical jump
+ Ruck craft
+ Explosive speed
+ Defensive pressure
+ Groundballs
+ Footy IQ
+ Decision making
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Kicking precision
- Strength
Bamford has plenty of what you are looking for in a ruck, from her athletic capabilities to her follow-up work and then ability to go forward and hit the scoreboard. What she does in the air is terrific, but she is equally fierce at ground level, applying copious amounts of defensive pressure as well as extracting the ball cleanly.
Focusing on her aerial work, it is the initial ruck stoppage where Bamford shines. Her ruck craft - which includes soft hand tap downs to teammates or more direct punches to space are all part of her repertoire. When it comes to marking, she has definitely improved that element, especially on the contested side of things, and while it is always an area she can develop further, has been diligent in focusing on it.
From a pure ball-winning perspective, Bamford has all the other pure rucks or ruck/forwards covered in this year's AFLW Draft. She finds the ball consistently and does not look out of place with 20-odd disposals on occasions, as well as the same amount of hitouts. Bamford does not just win it out of the ruck, but follows up exceptionally well and can burst away from the stoppage too with a blistering speed that few players her height possess.
On that speed, she also uses it for defensive acts, with several memorable run-down tackles including one in the forward pocket during Eastern's preliminary final victory over Murray Bushrangers. However that passage summed up what Bamford does well, and what she needs to improve on. Her brilliant run-down tackle and subsequent holding the ball free kick saw her lining up for goal from 25m out. Unfortunately she sprayed the kick out on the full.
Rucks are usually not the most efficient users, and Bamford at times can definitely have that more difficult ball drop down to the boot which can see some mistakes by foot. Generally her decision making is quite good, so with time and space she can usually put it to a good position, but is prone to the odd clanger here or there. Generally her hands are very clean and her decision making even in traffic by hand works out in favour of her side.
As a whole, Bamford's understanding of the game is perfectly fine, it is just the last execution that can let her down at times. With further improvement in that area, as well as her strength and contested marking, she can be more of a threat around the ground. As it stands though, her sublime ruck craft, great follow-up work and ability to impact when forward has her in a great position ahead of the 2025 AFLW Draft.
DRAFT RANGE: 10-30
SUMMARY:
Rucks are always a difficult position to try and predict where they land as they meet certain clubs needs over others. It would not be a shock to see Josie Bamford land somewhere in the first round, and if not she will surely be snapped up by the second after a seriously impressive top-age campaign.
