SNAPSHOT: “One of the premier rucks in this year’s AFLW Draft class who can also play forward.”

Madeleine Quinn is a Sydney Swans Academy member who is tied to the red and white with some elite athleticism and speed despite being the tallest of the Draft Combine invitees at 187cm. Hailing from the Maroubra Saints and UTS Bats programs, Quinn has always had the traits that catch the eye, but is gradually developing other elements of her game to be a more complete player.

Quinn’s impressive junior career started at the Saints back in Under 12s through the AFL Sydney Juniors competition. She played 26 games through her first two seasons, and managed 10 matches during 2020 when most of the country was severely limited by the global pandemic. Reduced to just eight matches in 2021, she had progressed through the age groups and won a flag with the Under 16s Saints in 2022.

By 2023, Quinn’s promise began to show, booting three goals from her two games including two against the Giants Academy at the National Development Championships, and she cracked in for seven matches at Under 18s level with the Saints to go with her 14 at Under 16s level.

In her bottom-age campaign last year, Quinn played all four games for the Swans Academy, averaging 11.3 disposals, 16.5 hitouts and 3.5 tackles plying through the ruck. She went on to fulfil the same role at the AFLW Under 18 Championships with 9.7 disposals, 17.3 hitouts and 4.3 tackles. A spot in the National Under 17 Futures squad followed, and Quinn was picked for the AFLW Academy and got to don the Australian jumper this year.

She built on her performances of 2025 to average 12.5 disposals, 3.0 marks, 20.5 hitouts and 5.0 tackles with the Swans, while notching up 9.8 disposals, 1.8 marks, 18.0 hitouts and 2.5 tackles with the Allies. At Sydney Premier Division level, Quinn played 17 games and booted 10 goals throughout the last two seasons including a haul of three against eventual premiers North Shore Bombers in Round 12 this year.

Quinn deservedly earned a National Draft Combine invite with her elite athletic traits on display, which complemented a really solid top-age season.

STRENGTHS:

+ Athleticism
+ Competitiveness
+ Speed
+ Ruck craft
+ Overhead marking
+ Defensive pressure
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Kicking consistency
- Groundballs
- Production

Quinn is first and foremost a ruck so therefore her profile begins in the middle where her ruck craft stands out. She is able to palm down balls to her midfielders, and then follows up well with her defensive pressure at ground level. Thought not a high accumulator, Quinn can use her body effectively to aid her midfielders and protect the ball drop or clear it herself quickly.

In the air, Quinn is a strong mark of the football, and while her numbers do not always do her justice, at Coates Talent League level this year she clunked three grabs per game and was a force to be reckoned with. The biggest nightmare for opponents is not just in the air, but once the ball hits the deck, Quinn can burst away and outpace many smaller players. Her speed including her 20m sprint time of 3.25 seconds is ridiculously explosive for a 187cm ruck.

While her work at ground level - being a little more clean below her knees - needs improving, she has been developing that aspect, and after all at her height, the air is where she will do her best work anyway. Defensively she will apply great tackling pressure and follows up well from the stoppage to lock the ball in or assist in her midfielders pouncing on the loose ball.

Her competitive nature flows in this area, and that comes naturally which is a great sign for the future. With ball in hand, Quinn's kicking could improve, but its also still at an average rate where its not a downfall per say, but more so an improvement. That, along with finding more of the ball will be a way she can only get better, and her upside is undeniable.

The amount of 187cm players with a 3.25-second 20m sprint and a commanding presence in the air is very rare. She will have many suitors across the board trying to prise her out of the Swans, and while her ruck craft is what will likely have her in that role going forward, she has shown enough to suggest she can play forward too.

Overall, Quinn is an exciting talent and will be one of the first couple of Swans - with Alex Neyland - to be taken in this year's AFLW Draft. Sydney might have to pay a hefty price to match a bid, but she is worth it given the value she adds and enormous upside within her game.

DRAFT RANGE: 10-25

SUMMARY:

Madeleine Quinn is definitely among the first round likely chances in this year’s AFLW Draft. Given her upside and ridiculous athleticism, Quinn could very much be on the lower end of the top 10 or just outside. On current production she is in that mid-to-late first round, and though bids on Academy players often come later than expected – hence allowing till 25 with her range – expect plenty of clubs wanting to add the towering athletic to their books.
