SNAPSHOT: “A classy ball user with high footy IQ, clean hands, elite endurance and terrific defensive pressure.”
Marlo Graham might have been limited to what she was capable of this season due to injury, but when she was out on the park, her performances were hard to fault. An extremely talented player, Graham oozes class and her balance of offensive impact with defensive capabilities make her a really valuable all-round player.
Graham’s football journey began as a real youngster back in 2015, where she signed up with Parkside in the Yarra Junior Football League (YJFL). She brought up her 50th game by 2018, and had 66 prior to the global pandemic which saw her 2020 season cancelled. Graham returned to Parkside for the 2021 season playing across two Under 14s sides.
A step up to the Youth Girls open side took place when Graham was just 14, indicating her early talent, while still going around in her Under 15s age group. Interleague representation also took place that year, playing two games for the YJFL as Graham made her way into the Northern Knights program ahead of the 2023 season.
She played the Futures matches, secured a spot with Vic Metro at the National Development Championships and was named among the best in all four games between those two competitions. Naturally an Under 18s debut beckoned, and while she was kept to just five games that season, showed enough to suggest she was on track to be a talent to remember for the future.
In her bottom-age season of 2024, Graham averaged 19.5 disposals, 3.4 marks, 7.4 tackles and 3.5 inside 50s, while kicking six goals in her 11 games for the Northern Knights. A spot with Vic Metro followed, and she gained a great experience as a bottom-ager through the national carnival. While missing out on the National Academy, Graham made the Vic Metro summer hub and went from strength to strength.
Though injury would strike in her top-age season keeping the talented Knights leader to just five games, she racked up 27.4 disposals, 3.4 marks, 5.3 clearances, 6.2 tackles and booted three majors in that time. After missing the first game with Vic Metro, Graham returned to the ‘Big V’ and played out the remaining matches, averaging 17.3 disposals, 2.3 marks, 3.3 clearances and 8.0 tackles rotating between the midfield and attack.
It was no surprise the talented ball user earned a National Draft Combine invite, and would be in first round contention given her wide array of weapons. Boasting an elite tank and plenty to like, she is a player who can fit into any club, as highly regarded off the field as she is on it.

STRENGTHS:
+ Footy IQ
+ Clean hands
+ Skills
+ Composure
+ Defensive pressure
+ Endurance
+ Leadership
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Strength
- Aerial ability
Graham has a nice mix of class and smarts, which enables her to just do the little things right. Her footy IQ and composure under pressure ensures she makes good decisions with ball in hand, while her elite endurance ensures she can outlast opponents for four quarters.
If honing in on her smarts and skills side, Graham has shown she can play both in the middle and up forward because she reads the play well and positions herself effectively. Quite often on the turnover she gets into the right space to win the ball, and if there is a chance to force a turnover herself, she is right there in the thick of it.
Around the coalface, Graham is clean and precise by hand, and can weight her kicks to the outside allowing runners to get into space and begin transition forward. When in space herself, Graham is more than happy to put speed on the ball and sidestep an opponent on her way to goal. Sometimes she can run into trouble at different points, often dancing her way out only for reinforcements to arrive, so on occasions she could pick the right option a touch earlier, but Graham has also earned the licence to do so.
From an athletic perspective, Graham scored a 17.1 yo-yo test in the preseason, which is among the top few people in the nation. It is an elite score, while her sprint and agility scores were also goof without being outstanding. On-field she moves well and has great spatial awareness to maximise the gaps in congestion, and move accordingly to get free.
Looking at her improvements, Graham is not an overly prolific player in the air, and that should come as not surprise considering she stands at 164cm. Though as competitive and fierce as anyone else at ground level, Graham is not a huge aerialist even though she can jump. That of course goes hand-in-hand with needing to improve her strength as she is on the lighter side of draft prospects. If she can improve that area and become more physically imposing, it will only further help her impact on the inside.
In saying that, Graham is a tenacious tackler, and her defensive pressure is elite. Her numbers are off the charts, and with her endurance and work rate, she does not leave a stone unturned in order to win the ball for her side. Her leadership qualities are clear, named vice-captain of the Knights this season, and captained one of the Under 17 Futures sides last year.
As a whole, Graham's combination of offensive and defensive traits, as well as her natural footballing ability and huge endurance base, enables her to not only win the ball and be effective, but do it for a long period of time.
DRAFT RANGE: 15-30
SUMMARY:
Marlo Graham is an intriguing prospect when it comes to draft range, because on pure ability, she is right up there in first round contention. A lack of top-age exposure compared to others – though she did get to play three national carnival games – might have her below some others who have shot up, but her overall profile and clear talent is undeniable and she should find a home somewhere in the first couple of rounds.
