PROFILE:
Zielinski can be an enjoyable player to watch, particularly for spectators of traditional Aussie rules football. Boasting velcro hands along with a powerful kick that could travel 50m, she is one of those players that teammates can rely on to put the ball through the big sticks.
The Sandringham Dragons forward first came onto the scene in 2021 as a 15-year-old where she kicked four goals in three games, averaging 5.3 disposals and 1.3 marks. Though only young and raw then, the signs were there. Twelve months later, Zielinski kicked 11 goals in seven games at an averaged of 12.1 disposals and 2.9 marks.
Those numbers were impressive for a tall forward, and though her 2023 season took a little while to get going after starting in Round 5, Zielinski kicked back-to-back two-goal hauls, and then finished the year with tow matches of three majors. The final game against the Western Jets was arguably her best, with 14 disposals and three goals, but also six tackles.
Not known for her ground level work, Zielinksi had that game, along with an eight-tackle performance against the Dandenong Stingrays, showing a desire to improve. All her best work is done in the air, and when put in her vicinity, is usually one who will clunk it. Then her set shot routine is pure, and anywhere within range usually gets the job done.
Along with her technical ability, Zielinski's strength and understanding of the game helps her to be a strong leading forward. At times she played at half-forward to add another string to her bow in covering more of the ground. Though not as impactful when inside 50, it was a step in the right direction.
For the Sandringham Dragons forward, the main knocks are in her athleticism, and mainly her endurance. Her straight line speed - when on the lead - is pretty handy, but it is the likes of her leaping and agility from those elements that could further improve. As a stronger key position player, Zielinski aims to play to her strengths, and in one-on-ones is where she thrives rather than loose ball situations.
Furthermore, her endurance is still a work in progress and will have to improve significantly for the next level. However, 2023 saw the Dragons tall turn a corner in that regard and aim to knuckle down to become more versatile in her forward roles and if she makes it to the elite level, could carry on that momentum.
Clubs know what they are getting with Zielinski, as she is a reliable, contested marking tall forward with an eye for goals. Though not the most athletic talent, she makes up for it with her natural forward craft and ability to do damage on the scoreboard.
SUMMARY:
From a footballing talent sense, Mia Zielinski is a readymade prospect, but in terms of her all-round game, she would be considered a long-term talent. Her main aim from this point would be to focus on that endurance, and being in an elite level program would help with that. Though she missed out on Vic Metro selection this year, Zielinski still enjoyed an impressive season with the Dragons, averaging more than a goal a game.
