Highlighted as one to watch during preseason, Nathaniel Sulzberger began to deliver on that promise late in the year. The powerful midfielder-forward hails from Tasmania, but won the Coates Talent League premiership with Sandringham Dragons this year having headed north to board at Caulfield Grammar.

Much of the hype around Sulzberger derived from his blend of explosive traits and endurance running. At 187cm, he ran a 6:17 2km time trial at the state draft combine to put him in the top five nationwide, but also offered the capacity to fly for strong overhead marks and fend off opponents at the contest.

After a steady start and steadier National Championships with the Allies, Sulzberger showed marked improvement late in the season. His kicking inside 50 was much more assured and effective, with the Tasmanian lowering his eyes and delivering with conviction. His use by hand was always quite sound, especially when exiting stoppages and chaining up in running waves.
