SNAPSHOT: “A clean and effective inside midfielder who had a breakout top-age campaign .”
Olivia Gorman is a predominantly-inside midfielder who when balancing all things out, ticks a lot of boxes as a midfielder. Her football knowledge and decision making is clear, and she is ultra-clean with her hands at the coalface, while putting out some high production performances consistently throughout 2025.
The Northern Knights talent began her career out at Lauirmar in the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) back in 2017 where she stepped up to even play a game in the age group up. A move to Diamond Creek in 2018 followed and she played 32 games over the next two seasons prior to the global pandemic shutting everything down.
Gorman return to the action to have a strong 2021 season in the Under 14s, booting nine goals across 11 games, while also representing the NFNL in the Metro Junior Development Series. Advacing into the Under 16s, Gorman remained a star on the rise, and by 2023 had been brought into the Northern Knights’ system.
The talented double bottom-ager played both Futures matches for the Knights, and then made her Under 18s debut in Round 5 of the 2023 season. She went on to play 11 games and average 9.5 disposals, 2.2 marks and 2.3 tackles to get a taste of what was to come.
A permanent member of the Under 18s squad in 2024 saw Gorman add another 13 games to her tally, lifting her numbers to 16.3 disposals, 2.0 marks and 4.9 tackles, becoming a rock solid midfielder and working in tandem with a number of other talented Knights. Her form from 2024 earned her a spot in Vic Metro’s hub ahead of the 2025 season.
Her top-age campaign – though it did end on the sidelines with injury – was enormous. Across nine games, Gorman racked up more disposals than she had in her 13 from last year, and managed 24.0 disposals, 3.6 marks and 4.7 tackles, while also going forward to hit the scoreboard with five goals. Though the Knights’ win-loss record was not as impressive as the year before, Gorman was a shining light alongside the likes of Scarlett Johnson and Marlo Graham.

STRENGTHS:
+ Contested work
+ Stoppage craft
+ Clean hands
+ Ground balls
+ Footy IQ
+ Decision making
+ Defensive pressure
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Explosive speed
- Strength
Gorman is one of those players in this year's AFLW Draft crop that perhaps has flown under the radar a little. She has lifted her floor with great consistent performances, and really become one of the best pure inside ball-winners in the draft. In saying that, her taste for the outside when forward showed she has the flexibility, and hit the scoreboard on a number of occasions for the Knights.
The Northern Knights ball-winner might not have racked up the ball at the national championships in that next challenge level, but held her own, and got the keys to the on-ball role after Chloe Baker-West unfortunately went down with concussion and the side was already missing Jade McLay. Gorman defensively holds her own, but her her understanding of the stoppages and extracting it is where she shines the most.
Gorman's stoppage craft is elite, and she reads the ball off hands exceptionally well, getting to the right spots. Often she might get there and be bumped out of the way or tackled immediately, but she understands where to go, and when. For a player who has essentially spent the majority of her time inside around the bigger bodies, Gorman has done well given her size - strength - compared to many of her opponents.
She packs a punch and will no hold back, but that strength is one of her key improvements that will help her become even more damaging. Between her strength and adding some extra explosiveness to her game, Gorman is building on the aspects outside her footballing abilities to become a more complete player.
With ball in hand, Gorman is clean and her weighted handpasses through traffic are a work of art at times. She can pick out opponents through congestion and execute efficiently, while by foot she is neat and makes good decisions. Like most players working in an inside role, she can be forced to rush the ball to boot, or be forced to kick in a way that is less than ideal, which is why adding that strength and speed to her game will be important.
However with time and space she can nail passes with supreme vision and decision making, and even if she does not produce the perfect kick, her decision making usually at least allows her teammates a shot forward of the ball. Essentially, her ball use is not a concern and she has improved that aspect of her game as well over the last 12 months.
In many ways, Gorman is similar to Mia Anderson from Tasmania because both players have been terrific inside ball-winners, but in 2025, added extra layers to their game to add hurt factor outside the stoppages. Gorman is still a predominant contested player, but she will now go forward, take a mark and hit the scoreboard, all while racking up the touches consistently.
DRAFT RANGE: 25-50
SUMMARY:
Olivia Gorman is one of a number of prospects in that mid-draft logjam who has some really nice traits. She can hold her own as an inside midfielder, but her ability to expand her game, go forward and hit the scoreboard has been outstanding. She averaged 5.9 clearances for the Knights this season, but also booted five goals and became a great transitional threat.
