SNAPSHOT: “A silky smooth rebounding defender with lethal foot skills and sound decision making.”

Sam Gilbey’s top-age campaign has been far from smooth sailing, but the Claremont and Hale School prospect had a solid amount of runs on the board already. Having represented Western Australia at both Under 17 and 19 levels last year, he earned AFL Academy selection and was pegged as one of his state’s top talents.

Fast forward to 2022, and the 18-year-old turned out for a couple of Reserves hitouts in preseason before getting to work in the WAFL Colts and PSA competitions. Unfortunately, a bout of glandular fever disrupted his run and it was only until after his National Championships campaign that Gilbey began to feel himself again.

Having built some promising form, Gilbey’s crowning performance of the year was a 31-disposal, six-mark effort against Swan Districts in Round 15, but in his very next game he was struck down with a fractured tibia having landed heavily in a marking contest. Walking again on the road to recovery, he remains a draft prospect with undeniable talent – boasting a lethal left foot off the half-back line.

STRENGTHS:

+ Athleticism
+ Class
+ Decision making
+ Intercept marking
+ Kicking
+ Rebounding

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Contested game
- Durability
- Strength

Gilbey says himself that half-back is where he plays his best footy, and he has all the tools of a classic rebounding defender. At 187cm, he holds his own aerially with intercept marks and sets off confidently into space, showcasing good speed and a punishing left-foot kick. Fittingly, he looks to the likes of Lachie Whitfield and Christian Salem for inspiration.

Unlike some, Gilbey utilises his athletic gifts on-field and has incorporated them perfectly into his game. As his 70 per cent uncontested possession rate suggests, he is the type who can take on the role of designated kicker and hurt the opposition when afforded time and space, particularly by foot.

So lethal is his left boot, that Gilbey went by hand just 20 per cent of the time during this year's National Championships. While certainly damaging with little pressure on his disposal, Gilbey also makes sound decisions in tight spots and can open up the game with long-range disposals. Add to that his ability to run and carry, and he's a real metres gained asset with the class to make opposition pay.

In terms of question marks, there will be one on his durability after an injury interrupted year. He has been made to learn resilience the hard way after repeat setbacks, but is making good strides in his recovery. Building back his fitness base will be important in the way of his year one hopes, having played such relatively little football.

Another factor which may place Gilbey in the long-term bracket is his frame. His style of play suits it, but he can look to add some meat to his bones to stand up to the rigours of the elite level and become accustomed to a more high-impact, contested flow of play.

DRAFT RANGE: 25-40

SUMMARY:

There will always be a need for rebounding half-backs, especially given the slingshot style which clubs are increasingly incorporating. His athletic traits and class with ball in hand play strongly in his favour, counteracting his lack of top-age exposure and the need to add some size to his frame. He projects as somewhat of a long-term option given his current injury status, but has all the talent to be a value pick in the second to third round range.
