#28
Sam van Rooyen
height: 193cm
weight: 83kg
D.O.B: 24-02-2005
Leagues: AFL U18 Championships
STRENGTHS:
+ Aerial ability
+ Agility
+ Kick penetration
+ Upside
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Consistency
- Production
The younger brother of Melbourne's Jacob van Rooyen, Sam is cut from a similar cloth with a few differences. The largely key forward focused younger sibling is still filling out his frame at 83kg, but has elite agility and a great vertical leap. His older brother produced some promising games at AFL level for the Demons this season, and helped keep his younger brother in the minds of recruiters.
van Rooyen junior is not the finished product just yet, with his production and four-quarter consistency still a work in progress. However, between his mobility and presence in the air, there is plenty to like about him. Along with those traits, van Rooyen has a penetrating kick, and in a challenging spot inside 50 for the Sandgropers, the forward tried to make the best of it.
He'll be a draft prospect taken on upside, most likely late in the draft. At his best, he has mouth-watering potential and proved as much with a breakout game against Subiaco early this year, booting 5.5 from 15 disposals and nine marks. He struggled to hit those heights again, but in a draft light on depth, should be in the frame with such exploits in his back pocket.
DRAFT RANGE: Late/Rookie
