SNAPSHOT: “One of the most damaging outside players in the AFLW Draft with elite aerial ability and great skills.”
Scarlett Johnson built on her promising two lead-up seasons to have a breakout 2025 campaign transforming from a contested marking forward to a wing/defender and becoming the ultimate utility for the Northern Knights and Vic Metro.
The 175cm utility started her career at Eltham way back in 2017, sticking with the Panthers throughout her formative years. Johnson played 38 games across her first three seasons before her career was put on hold by the global pandemic of 2020.
Returning in 2021, Johnson picked up where she left off, booting 13 goals across six games in one Under 14s competition and making her debut for Eltham in the Under 16s. She went on to represent the Northern Football Netball League (NFNL) in the Vic Metro Junior Development Series across both that year and 2022, while cementing her place in the Under 16s at Eltham.
In 2022, Johnson booted a goal a game from 16 matches and was named in the best on 14 occasions, with the following season where her career really took off. She represented Vic Metro at the AFLW National Development Championships and got to play 13 games for the Northern Knights, including 11 at Under 18s level.
Averaged 10.3 disposals across her first season, the double bottom-ager further developed in 2024, lifting that average up to 12.9 touches, as well as 2.5 marks and 3.1 tackles. She kicked 12 goals from 15 games as the Knights pushed deeper into the finals series. After a big off-season, Johnson returned for her top-age year in a new role, moving from that tall forward position to a starting wing and rotating half-back where she utilised all of her athletic gifts.
That move resulted in a career-best season for Johnson, who finished 2025 with averages of 23.8 disposals, a massive 6.2 marks, 5.0 tackles, 3.4 inside 50s, 3.8 rebound 50s and seven goals across 12 matches. A strong stint with Vic Metro that saw her average 19.5 disposals, 4.5 marks, 2.5 tackles and 3.5 inside 50s and eventually a National Draft Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:

+ Aerial ability
+ Footy IQ
+ Athleticism

IMPROVEMENTS:
- Inside game
- Strength
A player with plenty of different layers, Johnson has a terrific balance of footballing and athletic traits. Starting with the latter, Johnson has tested exceptionally well across all physical testing disciplines from the vertical jump, to the 20m sprint, agility and 2km time-trial. It emphasises not only Johnson's ability to cover the ground, but to do so at a high top speed, with bursts and evasive techniques.
The athletic traits also assist with other parts of her game such as her aerial prowess and outside game as Johnson can fly high, safely pull in the mark, and work into space through a combination of speed and endurance, or get out of trouble with her evasion. Even just looking at those traits alone, Johnson would be among the most exciting players in the draft crop, but there is much more to her game.
On top of those elements, Johnson's footballing IQ and skills are also very good. Over short, medium or long distances, Johnson is capable of hitting targets with a reliable technique. The only slight query might be when she is under pressure, because being such a capable outside player, when forced into a rushed situation, she can naturally overcook the kick. Generally it will still go to a fairly advantageous position, but is the one way to quell her influence.
Perhaps more impressively is the fact Johnson has been able to apply all of these traits in such a consistent way across the whole 2025 season. Usually players might adapt or improve one or two extra elements from their bottom-age season to their top, but the Northern Knights tall really pieced it together in such a quick turnaround from last season to even the opening game of 2025.
While her overall profile is quite impressive, Johnson naturally does have some progressions to make. Most notably her strength at ground level and a greater inside presence, but that is a case where the latter is not as vital given she is such a natural outside player. In the air she is strong thanks to her ultra-safe hands, but building greater strength when going up to senior level will be important if coming up against experienced wingers or flankers who might opt to engage in wrestles and not allow her to use her natural athleticism in marking contests.
As a whole, Johnson came on like a house on fire in 2025 and went from being a potential mid-draft prospect to be a clear first round talent. She can play forward, wing or half-back, and showed she could hit the scoreboard even when not playing inside 50. A four-goal game late in the year rotating between wing and half-forward finished off the season in style for Johnson.
DRAFT RANGE: 6-15
SUMMARY:
Scarlett Johnson’s 2025 season was nothing short of sensational, and clubs will view her in a number of different ways. Able to play forward, back or on the wing, Johnson provides excellent versatility and will be a player who attracts plenty of club interest in the AFLW Draft. Expect her to be picked up somewhere in the first round.
