Summary
SNAPSHOT: “Howden provided consistent run off a wing for Sandringham and then spent time in defence for Vic Metro, using her work rate and decision making skills to help her state.”
Scout Howden co-captained Sandringham Dragons this year and ticked a lot of boxes over her football journey. A well-rounded player who has primarily locked down a wing role but also spent time coming out of defence, Howden is just good across the board without one particular elite trait.
Looking at Howden’s journey, she split her time between football and basketball, representing St Kilda City in the South Metro Junior Football League (SMJFL). She progressed up the grades in the competition and represented the interleague in 2021 before earning a spot on the Sndringham Dragons list in 2022.
There, Howden played her three games for the Futures and cracked in to finish the year in the Under 18s side as a double bottom-ager. She got a taste of what was to come, though her bottom-age campaign in 2023 saw her take her game to another level. Quickly establishing herself on the wing – often donning the long sleeves – Howden averaged 20.5 disposals, 3.0 marks, 3.2 tackles, 2.2 inside 50s and 2.3 rebound 50s.
Howden was handed a setback coming into 2024 by missing out on the Vic Metro hub, which meant the Dragons wing would need to impress in the first half of the Coates Talent League Girls competition to represent her state. Luckily, Howden did just that, not dipping below 20 touches in her first seven Dragons appearances, and having 24 or more disposals on four occasions.
That lead her to running out for the Under 21 All-Stars playing in defence, and then getting the call-up for Vic Metro where after being left out of the first game, finished the carnival with two to her name. She had a respectable 16 disposals, three marks, two tackles and three rebound 50s across her two games in the ‘Big V’.
She finished off the Talent League Girls season in style as the Dragons made the finals, though her year ended in Wildcard Round against the Northern Knights after sustaining an ankle injury and only playing half the match. Though her season ended on a sour note, she put in the work throughout the year and was well regarded by both her Dragons teammates, coaching staff and Vic Metro companions alike.

PROFILE:
Scout Howden is a workhorse in the way that she goes about her football. Able to cover the ground really well, the Sandringham Dragons wing has a well-rounded game that features both offensive and defensive traits. Not afraid to get back into defence to assist her side, Howden can create scoring opportunities through her run and carry.
Playing off a wing, Howden showed a consistent approach to her running patterns and decision making, usually looking to bite off those riskier kicks into the corridor, but when not there, she did look for the safer, high-retention passes. That comes back to her footy IQ which enables her to get into good positions across the ground and mop up when required, or go forward and press the attack button.
While admittedly often in space, Howden consistently took marks and showed she can compete well in the air, standing at a tall 174cm which enables her to match it against most players. While not overly fast compared to some outside players, Howden makes up for it with her understanding of the game and she covers the ground well by getting into ball-winning positions.
She starts early and gets to space where she can dish off for one-twos or chip a pass forward just to keep the ball in motion. Always looking to keep the pill moving in transition, she works hard contest-to-contest and leads by example with her second and third efforts.
Howden's speed is a question mark given she likes to run and carry, but being able to assess situations and get into the right spots reduces the impact of that deficiency on her game. Additionally, her contested work and strength are areas of improvement, having played as that wing or rebounding half-back.
Though those roles are likely to be what she adopts at a high level given her work rate and footy IQ, adding a contested side to her game would be helpful in further developing her overall profile. As it stands, she has put in a body of work over the journey and with a basketball background is able to understand space around her and move accordingly.
Across 2024, Howden has shown her ability to cover ground consistently well with a ball-winning reliability, and that alone will hold her in good stead. She has areas to work on across the board, but comes with high praise as Dragons co-captain and plays a niche role that has become more crucial at the elite level over the last few years.
DRAFT RANGE: 40+
SUMMARY:
Scout Howden is a player with a nice foundational base to build on, while still having improvements left to come. Expect her to come into consideration in the second half of the draft, with a National Draft Combine invite indicating that she has impressed enough clubs throughout the course of 2024 to join that exclusive group.
