SNAPSHOT:

Serina Baukes is a strong defender out of the Sydney Swans Academy who finished off the AFLW Under 18 Championships with her best game of the national carnival. A competitive player one-on-one, her back 50 was often under siege but her strength, reading of the play and intercept marking held her in good stead.

STRENGTHS:

+ One-on-ones
+ Intercept marking
+ Reading the play
+ Strength
+ Penetrating kick

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Consistency
- Versatility

PROFILE:

Baukes is a player out of the UTS Bats in the AFL Sydney Women's Premier Division, standing at 171cm and gaining great experience playing for the Allies on the national stage. She played two of the three games, averaging 9.5 disposals and 3.5 marks, which followed on from similar numbers in the Talent League Girls playing for the Sydney Swans Academy.

A strong marking defender, Baukes has some clear standout traits that come with her gamestyle, which is her overhead ability, strength and reading of the play. She gets into good positions to give her best chance of marking the ball, and when bringing it to ground, attacks it fiercely with a high level of competitiveness.

In the clash against Western Australia, Baukes did well in the opening quarter, going head-to-head with equally matched Sandgropers skipper, Anjelique Raison. She matched her for strength and did well to bring the ball to ground, or get into the front position to mark. Once she had the ball, Baukes showed off her penetrating kick which would clear the danger be it in-play or from an intercept grab.

In terms of her improvements, Baukes could further her versatility with the capacity to go forward given her transferable traits to that part of the ground. Her aerial ability and reading of the play suits an inside 50 role, and along with building greater consistency, could take further steps in her overall profile.

In summary, Baukes is a player with some clearly defined strengths, and areas of improvement. If she can continue to develop the latter, and be seen as a long-term talent for AFLW clubs, then she will remain among the draft conversations.

SUMMARY:

As one of the few NSW/ACT talls, Serina Baukes is a player who will likely be looked at closely by the two Academies in the state, but could fill a role for another team altogether. More of a possibility rather than anything for certain, Baukes’ traits and season was enough to get noticed by AFLW recruiters.
