SNAPSHOT: “A physically strong one-on-one defender who shot into draft contention off the back of a consistent national carnival.”

Sienna Timmermans plays the role of lockdown defender exceptionally well, and though she has not had the exposure to the elite pathways some others might have had, inclusion into the state side, followed by a rock solid national championships helped pave the way to throw her hat in the ring for the AFLW Draft.

Timmermans arguably has the least footballing experience of any of the AFLW Draft Combine invites, having spent plenty of time as a netballer throughout her life, and then opted to try her hand at footy this season. One of only three players above top-age level to receive a Draft Combine invite, Timmermans made up ground in a quick space of time.

There is not much to tell about her footballing background as it essentially all came this season, stepping up to WAFLW level with Perth where she played 12 games as a tall defender. Standing at 174cm, Timmermans played a key role for the Sandgropers who were missing Evie Cowcher to injury, and despite having minimal experience compared to her peers, held her own.

Her first three games out of the block saw her hit double-digit disposals, and though she saw plenty of it as the first-year club was adapting to life at the top level, Timmermans showed a great competitive nature and ability to lock on to jobs one-on-one. She would finish the season averaged 9.1 disposals, 2.3 marks and 4.3 tackles with the demons, while managing 5.5 disposals, 1.0 marks, 4.3 tackles and 1.8 rebound 50s for Western Australia in a pure lockdown role.

STRENGTHS:

+ Physicality
+ Competitiveness
+ Endurance
+ One-on-ones
+ Accountability
+ Defensive pressure

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Production
- Exposure

Timmermans' relative new experience to football means she is still learning aspects of the game, so while a lot of what she showed did seem to come naturally, the Perth prospect will be looking to build on what she has learnt at the Demons and Sandgropers going forward. From a physical standpoint, she is in a good spot, and the 19-year-old is a no-frills, reliable back who can take a grab as well as spoil when competing one-on-one.

Her physicality is a key strength of Timmermans, able to match it with most in the air, as her in-between height of 174cm - slightly smaller than a key position player but still a tall - enables her to be defensively versatile. Her competitive nature and accountability to an opponent sticks out as perhaps the most highlight-driven traits, but ones that are crucial in playing her role.

It was fortunate Timmermans got the late call-up to the State Draft Combine, as she got to completely blow her peers away in the 2km time trial. In one of the fastest starts, the Perth tall was off and gone, half a lap clear of her nearest rival less than a kilometre into the trial. She clocked a time of 7:34 which is a little bit off Alannah Welsh's top score of 7:07, but it would have been interesting to see had she been amongst a bigger field. She won the time-trial by 44 seconds, so no doubt she could clock an even faster time if required to dig deep.

Athletically she tested fairly well with her agility impressive, albeit up against three of the most agile players in the state in Lucy Greenwood, Sienna Gerardi and Maya Louvel-Finn. Still, her numbers stack up, and her.gameplay throughout the year combined with her athletic abilities further indicate her defensive versatility against the more mobile forwards.

As a whole, there are not too many players who cross to a new code in their draft year and achieve what Timmermans has been able to achieve. She has exceeded expectations, but done so through hard work and determination. Regardless of what happens in the AFLW Draft, she can be proud of her efforts, and is one that at the very least, clubs will keep an eye on going forward.

DRAFT RANGE: Late

SUMMARY:

Sienna Timmermans quickly made up for lost ground this year coming into Perth Demons’ program and having an immediate impact to make the West Australian side. She competes so strongly one-on-one and her 2km time trial will no doubt have interested clubs further, While she is still likely to be that possible draft prospect, she has not put a foot wrong in her defensive habits this season.
