SNAPSHOT: “A strong-marking key forward who can also roll through the ruck, Xavier Walsh has terrific upside, albeit limited exposure at high levels.”

A prospect from left field over in Western Australia is Xavier Walsh, who was part of the state’s array of tall forward options this year. The East Perth spearhead has developed steadily over the last two seasons, playing as an over-ager in the 2022 Under 16 National Championships and only making his WAFL Colts debut in Round 4 this year. A combination of injury and suspension prevented the 18-year-old from making a greater splash in his top-age campaign, but recruiters were left pleased by their first impressions in Colts Super Round. AFL interest in Walsh was demonstrated in his invite to the National Draft Combine, despite only playing one game in representative colours during 2023. He ran out the season with East Perth, booting 13 majors in eight games and being held goalless just once as the Royals missed out on finals.

STRENGTHS:

+ Aerial ability
+ Contested marking
+ Vertical leap
+ Size
+ Upside

IMPROVEMENTS:

- Consistency
- Endurance

The crux of Walsh's game lies in the marking realm, with it being the most eye-catching and fruitful part of his game. Over a third of his average 10.3 WAFL Colts disposals came from marks this year, clunking 3.6 per game with 1.5 of them being contested. He's the type of forward who presents full-chested and attacks the ball hard in the air, either crashing packs or going back with the flight full stretch. Either way, he is consistently able to get hands to the ball and create a contest.

That kind of aerial power lends to his goal kicking prowess. In eight WAFL Colts appearances this season, Walsh booted 13 majors and was held goalless just once. He also snared multiple goals in exactly half of his games, pointing towards consistent scoreboard impact. With his attack on the ball, size (195cm, 89kg) and score involvements, Walsh is a looming presence inside 50. He is nimble enough to get it done at ground level too, despite not necessarily setting the National Draft Combine alight.

In terms of improvement areas, Walsh can certainly work on his endurance and consistency. He ran a 7:16 2km time trial and had a few low-production games this season, with perhaps an uninterrupted run at it required to showcase his full potential. He has less exposure at high levels than most other prospects this year, and is perhaps a late developer who could come on strongly in time. His game is still evolving, as showcased by his role pinch-hitting through the ruck this season.

DRAFT RANGE: Late/Rookie

SUMMARY:

Clubs with a keen eye on Walsh will hope to snap up a potential bargain late in the draft, with his upside and pure ability arguably good enough to earn a chance at the top level. There are clearly areas he can improve on and exposed form is somewhat against him compared to others, but the West Australian offers plenty of promise as a marking forward with a unique method of attacking the aerial contest. It would be a surprise to see him feature any earlier than the first 40 picks in the National Draft, so expect Walsh to be a late smokey or rookie chance.
