SNAPSHOT: “An athletic key position back with a great defensive team-first attitude.”
Zara Neuwirth has both the height and athleticism that will hold her in good stead for the future. The 183cm key defender has been a consistent force throughout her years in the Coates Talent League, and while not considered ‘flashy’, she rarely loses one-on-ones and can compete against a multitude of opponents thanks to her strengths.
Neuwirth’s football journey started at the Kew Rovers back in 2017 where she played 16 games and even kicked a couple of goals. By the end of 2019, the developing tall had managed 49 games and kicked four of what would be six junior career goals. In 2022, Neuwirth made her Under 18s debut for Kew Rovers, playing 13 matches and then representing the Yarra Junior Football League (YHJFL) Under 15 Girls interleague side.
When her double bottom-age season came around, Neuwirth cracked into the Oakleigh Chargers squad, playing Futures there before returning to Kew. She made her Coates Talent League Girls Under 18s debut in Round 13 against Tasmania, and went on to play seven consecutive matches and end up a premiership player in her first season at the club.
In 2024, the key defender continued to build on her game, and while she was not finding a stack o the ball – just 5.1 touches per match – she held down a deep defensive post with consistency. She was hard to beat, and her opponents struggled to get off the chain which earned Neuwirth a spot with Vic Metro. Playing two games there, she again only had the four touches per match, but is much better known for her negating duties.
A goal for 2025 was to lift that offensive impact, and Neuwirth did do that, raising the bar up to 9.8 disposals, but towards the end of the season, the key defender was really thriving, even having a career-high 20 touches in Round 18 against the Ranges, as well as another 17-disposal game in the preliminary final. She does not need to win much of the ball to have an impact, as her blanketing work speaks for itself.
Her form throughout the year was consistent, and she played some of her best footy at Vic Metro in 2025, averaging 12.5 disposals, 1.0 marks, 3.0 tackles and 4.0 rebound 50s, often taking the kickouts and launching them down the field. At the end of the season, Neuwirth received a National Draft Combine invite.

STRENGTHS:
+ Defensive pressure
+ One-on-ones
+ Athleticism
+ Aerial ability
+ Accountability
+ Team-first nature
+ Consistency
+ Kick penetration
IMPROVEMENTS:
- Kicking precision
- Intercept marking
Neuwirth is a true old school defender with some new athletic tricks. Her best games involve a balance of offensive and defensive actions, but the latter is certainly her bread and butter. She can lock down on an opponent and make life incredibly difficult, boasting a strong closing speed and aerial presence that forwards have to be aware of constantly.
Sometimes her opponents might think they have the jump on her, but Neuwirth can make up distance by reading the play and timing her spoils to perfection. The Oakleigh Chargers tall is a defender-first and will more than likely look to just bring the ball to ground. She can mark it, but that is an area of improvement, averaging just the 1.8 marks this season as she primarily looks to stop her direct opponent at all costs.
Her team-first attitude leads her to produce some timely spoils and then follow-up with a tackle or if she has the time and space, collect it herself and kick long to safety. While at times her kicking could be a touch more precise, she has a thumping kick that easily clears the defensive 50 when playing on, or buys herself and her teammate more time from the immediate danger.
So much is spoken about the explosive, offensive half-backs, but every side needs a Neuwirth. A 183cm true defender who will rarely lose, and is driven to get better. She has a nice endurance base for a tall, and moves well for a player of her height. Neuwirth is more than happy to sacrifice personal achievement in order to have team success, and her teammates can rely on her to do the job against any opponent.
While her size is better suited to the key position prospects, she does have that athleticism to match up against the medium talls as well. Offensively, Neuwirth really lifted her output this season, particularly for the 'Big V' and showed she has the capacity to do that if required. In saying that, she is so strong at defensively negating an opponent that it is her niche in a way because a lot of players can easily do the offensive work, but she can sit back and nail her role.
Overall, Neuwirth is an uncomplicated player who offers outstanding consistency, reliability and strength in the back half of the ground. She has the size to take on anyone, and the athleticism to match them in multiple facets. Given her size/athletic profile, Neuwirth ticks a lot of boxes that clubs are looking for when it comes to a pure defender.
DRAFT RANGE: 30-50
SUMMARY:
Zara Neuwirth is one of the better defensive players going around, and while not being an overly prolific offensive one, the Oakleigh Chargers and Vic Metro tall is a superb negator. She will be flexible for defensive line coaches to take on opponents and can also adapt mid-match if another player is getting off the chain. A real team-first talent and two-time premiership player at junior level.
