Swifts sign big as Nweke’s new challenge revealed
THE NSW Swifts are making big signings of their own this Suncorp Super Netball offseason, signing none other than star Silver Ferns shooter Grace Nweke ahead of the 2025 season.
Nweke may only be 22 years old, but has fast established herself as one of the world’s best shooters, and comes to the Swifts off the back of an ANZ Premiership title win with the Northern Mystics.
The Swifts have confirmed she will join the team after her international commitments with New Zealand have wrapped up. Speaking of international commitments, Netball New Zealand have confirmed that she will be allowed to play for the Silver Ferns this year because she played with the Mystics in the calendar year, but will not be allowed to play for the Silver Ferns next year.
Swifts coach Briony Akle was very excited about her team’s new signing.
“Grace is one of the best shooters in the world and we are very excited to welcome her to the Swifts,” she said.
“While she has established herself at international level, I feel she has only scratched the surface of her potential and we cannot wait to share this next chapter with her.
“When we chatted with Grace it was clear that she wanted to test herself in our competition and continue her growth as a player and person and that resonates with us.
“As a Club we are also deeply committed to supporting the aspirations of all our athletes when it comes to playing international netball.
Nweke is also excited about the new start.
“Playing with the Swifts in Australia will provide me with new challenges and experiences that will further hone my skills and, ultimately, benefit my game at all levels,” she said.
“Getting the opportunity to be exposed to different playing styles and strategies, week in and week out, is really important for my development and I am honoured to have the chance to do this at a club as successful and storied as the Swifts.
“I am ready for a shake-up and a new journey and cannot wait to get started with the Swifts.
“I also would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone at the Northern Mystics for making me the player I am today. As a proud Aucklander it fills me with great pride to reflect on my individual and collective achievements at the Mystics and my growth over those six years, and I will be eternally grateful to everyone at the Club.”
