Results on both ends of the scale in mixed round

THE City West Falcons have continued on their winning ways, this time downing the Melbourne Uni Lightning by 17 goals.

Melbourne Uni did get the better start to the match, but ultimately the Falcons showed their class and proved far too strong for their opponents.

The Falcons were the ones to break centre pass first, but the Lightning broke back the very next centre pass to get things back on centre pass, and scored four in a row to take the lead for themselves.

That buffer proved handy as the quarter progressed, and was increased thanks to some lovely defensive work from the likes of Maggie Caris and Gabby Coffey.

The Lightning were able to keep their small lead for much of the first term, but off the back of a defensive intercept from Sophie Hanrahan and some accurate shooting from Jane Cook and Uneeq Palavi, the Falcons were able to level up proceedings.

At quarter time both teams were still tied, both having scored 14 goals each.

The Falcons really racked up the intercepts early in the second term, and as such were rewarded with the lead. In the first half of the quarter they went on several multiple goal runs to really extend their lead out, before the Lightning returned the favour later in the term.

The lead did get out to as much as nine goals during the term, but ultimately sat at six at the main break.

Unfortunately for the Lightning things really came apart in the third term.

They were unable to stretch any multiple goal runs together as the Falcons really pulled away from them, and despite a solid fightback from the girls in blue in the final term it ultimately proved a task too big to accomplish.

In other results, the Blaze narrowly defeated Geelong, while the Express had their work cut out for them against the Strikers but did ultimately prevail. The Demons thrashed the Waves, while the Warriors and Hawks played out the season’s first draw.
