Thistles announce 2023 World Cup Squad

SCOTLAND is the latest country to announce its squad for the 2023 World Cup, with Thistles’ coach Tamsin Greenway revealing her squad of 12 and three reserves overnight Australian time.

Lead by Strathclyde Sirens duo Claire Maxwell and Emily Nicholl as Captain and Vice-Captain respectively, unsurprisingly most of the squad are either members’ of the Sirens senior side or development side.

There is a mix of experience and youth amongst the 12 player squad, with a total number of caps among the squad sitting at 320.

Maxwell may be off to her third World Cup, but for seven players – Cerys Cairns, Iona Christian, Rachel Conway, Cerys Finn, Hannah Grant, Hannah Leighton and Emma Love – it will be their first tournament.

Greenway spoke on the final squad, noting how happy she was with it and how she went about choosing the team.

“The biggest part of selecting the 12 is looking at the whole picture, who fits in tactically, who covers who, what are the what if’s, what do they bring to the culture? It’s so much more than just who plays netball well, the reality is this was the most competitive selection we’ve had since I’ve been in post which means behind the scenes the work we are doing is paying off,” she said.

“It’s an exciting squad, it’s a group of players that fit the style we want to play both in attack and defence. Its relatively young, but it’s a talented group that are always wanting to learn and achieve more.”

The Thistles begin their 2023 World Cup campaign with a match against Malawi on the 28th July.
