Vitality Roses Reunited series: Players to watch

THE Vitality Roses Reunited series is set to showcase the very best that England and Jamaica netball has to offer, with plenty of top talent and intriguing new faces hoping to showcase what they are capable of. We run through the players to watch across the court for both nations.

England:

Sophie Drakeford-Lewis (GA/WA), Imogen Allison (WD/C), Funmi Fadoju (GD/WD/GK)

Drakeford-Lewis is a real exciting talent in the England squad, and while the Roses have a couple of familiar faces who will likely earn the start ahead of her, fans of Team Bath and England Netball alike will hope to see the speedy playmaker hit the court. With excellent acceleration, great read of the play and goaling nous to boot, Drakeford-Lewis is a terrific back-up to Helen Housby. Most importantly, Drakeford-Lewis is also capable of strutting her stuff in wing attack, and will wreak havoc no matter which attacking position she takes on.

While unlikely to earn a heap of court time given the high calibre midcourters around her, defensive minded Allison is one to watch with her consistency and ability to turn a game around. Another who is a consistent starter when the main group is not around, Allison has more than proved she can hold strong in wing defence and has the leadership skills to play a real role through the middle. While she is not necessarily thhe flashiest player on court, she has the adaptability to change direction quickly and effectively, able to anticipate which way the ball is heading with little notice.

While there is plenty of hype around many of the players named on the England list, one that has had people talking is developing defender, Fadoju. The crafty and tenacious defender is one of the most explosive defenders around at the moment, able to use her impressive change of direction and anticipation to have an immediate impact on court. Still only 19-years-old, Fadoju adds a burst of speed and energy through the defensive end and is capable of playing all three defensive positions. If the young talent takes the court, expect her to play a high impact role as she adjusts to the higher stakes of international netball.

Jamaica:

Amanda Pinkney (GA/GS), Shadian Hemmings (WD), Latanya Wilson (GD/GK/WD)

A developing goaler who has recently earned her first caps, Pinkney will be hoping to add to her repertoire against higher calibre defence. With a great high shot to get over wandering hands, while Pinkney may lack in height she makes up for in composure and tenacity under pressure. Like Drakeford-Lewis, Pinkney will look to generate valuable minutes on court rather than a starting position, and hope to develop her craft nicely alongside captain Jhaniele Fowler.

With great anticipation, smarts and skill to match, veteran Hemmings is one to watch with her footwork and ability to come in for the intercept out of nowhere. While not necessarily a player who has been in the spotlight with so many big names around her, Hemmings is a hard worker who gets the job done with her speed and adaptability to the contest. Most importantly, this opportunity will be a critical one for the tenacious defender as she looks to assert herself on the international stage after sitting out of international duties for so long.

Wilson is one of the more established newcomers to the international scene, boasting tenacity and X-factor with her innate timing and great vision. While she can sometimes get ahead of herself and cause untimely penalties, Wilson is a consistent threat with her speed off the mark and ability to get hands to ball. She has plenty of flair to go with her determination and impact, while her high intensity game style should see her play a role in the back-end to change up the defensive dynamic. Still young, Wilson will hope to generate some critical minutes to boost her international experience.
