2022 Indian Wells ATP scores: Round of 64

AS part of the Indian Wells ATP 1000 Masters coverage, we’ll be adding the Round of 64 scores all in one place.

BOTIC BOILOVER FELLS FENIX

The second biggest upset of the men’s second round action at Indian Wells was unseeded Dutchman and US Open quarter finalist, Botic van de Zandschulp who fought past ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in three tight sets. Needing five match points to win it, the Dutchman took three hours and 16 minutes to eventually dispatch his younger opponent, winning in a thrilling 7-6 6-7 6-3 result. It could have as easily been straight sets to either player given the first two sets went to 7-4 in both tiebreakers.

“Of course you’re a little bit frustrated if you have match points in the second set. It’s not like I missed any shots, but he played some great points,” van de Zandchulp said post-match. “It’s a little bit easier than when you are missing chances. I thought I was playing well and that’s how I continued in the third.”

Auger-Aliassime fought hard to remain in the contest, but was not as consistent on serve, and a slow start to the decidin set cost him. The Canadian said he would learn from that, but certainly rued the missed opportunity.

“It was a long match so there are many moments that I kind of look back on and regret, but I think once it was one set all, I think I needed to have a much better start in the third set considering that I had the momentum back,” Auger-Aliassime said. “[That was] very poor for me to lose that first game [in the third set] the way I did.”

Now van de Zandschulp will take on Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the third round.

HOMETOWN HERO PAUL STUNS ZVEREV

Local hope Tommy Paul caused the biggest result of the second round, when he took out third seed Alexander Zverev in a tight three-set contest. Paul won 6-2 4-6 7-6, winning the deciding tiebreaker 7-2 to advanve through to the Round of 32. It made it the second time he has upset Zverev, and the fourth Top 10 win, a goal he hopes to achieve someday.

“I like playing here,” Paul said post-match. “I like the conditions. The fans really support [the American players] here, and that’s why we all love it. It feels like a real home tournament.

“I would hope that I can be in the Top 10. “That’s what it takes, you’ve got to beat more Top 10 players and I played well today, so I’m happy.”
