Alcaraz “unbelievable” in hard-fought win

SPANISH world number three Carlos Alcaraz was made to work for it by Frenchman Ugo Humbert in four sets across three hours, but eventually came away with the day seven win on Centre Court at Wimbledon to reach the quarter finals.

Alcaraz had to dig deep after the 16th seed produced some lights out tennis on the brink of elimination in the third set, storming to a 6-1 win, and pushing the Spaniard all the way in the fourth, before coming away with the 6-3 6-4 1-6 7-5 victory at the All England club.

Alcaraz moved one step closer to another epic battle with world number one Jannik Sinner, and said her felt he played “unbelievable” in his victory.

“I felt great playing today,” Alcaraz said post-match. “I felt I played to a really high level. I just try to fight every ball, every point. It doesn’t matter which part of the court I am. Just to give myself the chance to still be alive in the point. I fight until the last point – just to fight.”

The Spaniard produced 14 aces to 10, though hit two less winners (45-47) as Humbert gave everything he had to try and cause an upset. The left-hander only hit two more unforced errors (35-33) and four less total points (117-121) in the defeat, while capitalising off the third seed’s second serve with a 47 per cent success rate. He was also marginally ahead in first serve point percentage (67 to 66 per cent), but Alcaraz served at a far higher clip of 70 to 65 per cent.

Alcaraz will go on to face American 12th seed Tommy Paul in the last eight after the United States representative shook off a second set challenge from Spanish counter puncher Roberto Bautista Agut to win in straight sets.
