Roger(s) That, Shelby reaches San Jose quarters
AMERICAN Shelby Rogers has stormed into the San Jose quarter finals with a dominant straight sets victory over Greek top seed Maria Sakkari to back up her victory over US Open winner Bianca Andreescu in the first round. Rogers won 6-1 6-3 in an hour and 12 minutes, converting four of a possible 10 break point opportunities, while on the flip side, Sakkari could not convert any of her three break point opportunities.
Rogers was dominant off her serve, winning 72 per cent of her points, including 76 per cent off her first serve, which came with a 68 per cent clip. The American also served 10 aces for only one double fault, while in contrast, Sakkari would only win 52 per cent of her first serve points off a 45 per cent clip, and had one more double fault to her ace count (4-3). In the end it was a comprehensive victory for Rogers who made it through to the quarter finals at the San Jose WTA 500 event.
In other San Jose results, the other four seeds all out on court reached the final eight. American young gun Coco Gauff knocked off four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka in straight sets 6-4 6-4, while fourth seed Aryna Sabalenka and ninth seed Veronika Kudermetova also booked their spots in the final eight. They knocked off a pair of Americans in Caroline Dolehide and Claire Liu in their respective Round of 16 matches.
Rain delayed matches in Washington, with just six of the eight Round of 16 matches fully completed across the men’s and women’s singles. Daniel Evans upset Taylor Fritz after the American had to retire in the deciding set, while Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and Sweden’s Mikael Ymer also caused upsets over Karen Khachanov and Emil Ruusuvuori respectively. In the women’s tournament, second seed Emma Raducanu made her way through to the final eight to defeat Maria Osorio in two tiebreakers, while Russian Liudmila Samsonova and China’s Xiyu Wang.
The ATP 250 event in Los Cabos saw the top four seeds all won through to the semi-finals. Top ranked Daniil Medvedev and second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime both recorded straight sets win at opposite ends of the draw, while Cameron Norris and Miomir Kecmanovic also stamped their tickets into the last four.
