IT was a huge day of upsets at Washington after rain interrupted play the day before, as the semi-finalists in both the women’s WTA 250 event and men’s ATP 500 event were decided. In the women’s both seeds were ousted in a couple of upsets, with second seed Emma Raducanu and fourth seed Victoria Azarenka knocked out in straight sets. Raducanu went down to Russia’s Liudmila Samsonova, while Azarenka fell at the hands of Chinese lucky loser Xiyu Wang.
Those two upsets opened the door for sixth seed Kaia Kanepi who became not only the highest ranked player remaining, but the only seed in the semi-finals. She got there in a come from behind victory over Russian Anna Kalinskaya 6-7 6-4 6-3, while in the other quarter final, Australian Daria Saville ended the run of Canadian qualifier Rebecca Marino in straight sets, 6-1 7-5.
It as a tiring day for the men’s singles semi-finalists, with both top seed Andrey Rublev and Australian Nick Kyrgios forced to play two matches in the one day. Kyrgios came back overnight after being a set up over fourth seed Reilly Opelka to defeat another American in 10th seed Frances Tiafoe. The other semi-finalists are Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka and Sweden’s Mikael Ymer. Nishioka continued his great run by defeating Daniel Evans in three sets in the only match that featured two players who did not play earlier in the day. Ymer knocked off American Sebastian Korda, who earlier fought through a tough three sets over fifth seed Grigor Dimitrov.
In a more straight forward manner, the semi-finalists were decided at the San Jose WTA 500 event, with three all-seeded battles resulting in two upsets. Second seed Paula Badosa was too good for sixth seed Coco Gauff, but a pair of Russians – ninth seeded Veronika Kudermetova and seventh seeded Daria Kasatkina – both rolled higher ranked players Ons Jabeur (third seed) and Aryna Sabalenka (fourth) respectively. In the other quarter final, Shelby Rogers won the battle of the all-Americans, defeating Amanda Anisimova 6-4 6-4 to reach the semi-finals.
Wrapping up at Los Cabos, the finalists of the ATP 250 event were decided. Featuring the top four seeds, Daniil Medvedev and Cameron Norrie will both contest the decider. The top seed Medvedev defeated fourth seed Miomir Kecmanovic 7-6 6-1, while Norrie upstaged second seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in a three-setter, 6-4 3-6 6-3.
