AS PART of a new countdown series leading into the 2023 South Australian National Football League (SANFL) Women’s season, we will name 23 players to watch who are under 23. We are only looking at those players who were born January 1, 2000 or later, have played a SANFL Women’s senior match and have never been on an AFL Women’s list. Today we are at the penultimate ranking spot with number #2 and it is Woodville-West Torrens young gun, Shineah Goody.

Reigning AFL Women’s Under 18 Championships Most Valuable Player (MVP) winner Shineah Goody exploded in 2022, living up to the promise that was evident in her debut season the year before. Coming into a young Woodville-West Torrens side, she was able to play up both ends of the ground.

With class and skill personified, Goody then progressed into the midfield for her bottom-age year, where she starred for the Eagles, with an unparalleled work rate compared to her opponents. That form followed into the national championships, where she was simply sensational.

Goody is a name who most underage football fans will know, given her performance at the championships where she averaged 26.7 disposals, 6.7 marks, 5.7 tackles, 4.7 clearances, 2.3 inside 50s, 2.0 rebound 50s and 2.0 goals per game.

In summary, she did it all and was the clear standout for not only her state’s best player, but the top player in the entire carnival. She naturally won All-Australian honours and was quickly thrust into the spotlight. The softly spoken Goody quickly learnt how to deal with media as she went from quiet country talent to national sensation in the matter of weeks.

For those who have watched Goody over the last couple of years, the success will have come as no surprise. Even in her debut SANFL Women’s season, the forward turned defender impressed, averaging the 12.5 disposals, 2.5 marks, 5.4 tackles, 2.1 inside 50s and 1.9 rebound 50s per game.

Though slight in stature, Goody used her strengths to full advantage. A season later, she was a bonafide star of the SANFL Women’s, even copping tags from more experienced players, another hurdle she would have to overcome.

In her nine games last season, Goody averaged the 20.3 disposals, 5.0 marks, 4.3 tackles and 4.0 rebound 50s, largely playing through the midfield but working back hard to roll through defence. Her ability to get from the centre bounce to the last line to assist was incredible, and that work rate held her in good stead for the rest of the year.

Coming into 2023, Goody is set for an even bigger year and one that will likely see her spend more time on-ball, as she prepares to make the step up to the elite level.
