Victorian AFLW U18s trial squads named
VICTORIA’S top Under 18 AFLW Draft prospects will battle it out in a double-header at Werribee tomorrow to help finalise the Vic Metro and Vic Country squads for the upcoming National Championships. Both state sides will hold an internal trial match each with Vic Metro’s kicking off at 2pm, and Vic Country’s at 4pm.
Though both teams have some quality players missing, it gives a host of draft hopefuls the opportunity to stand up and don the ‘Big V’. For Vic Metro, the Blue and Green teams will do battle, with Sandringham Dragons recording a league-high 11 players across the sides, while Oakleigh Chargers (nine), Northern Knights (eight), Eastern Ranges and Western Jets (seven each), and Calder Cannons (four) round out the squads.
For Vic Country, Dandenong Stingrays boast the most across any of the 12 regions with a whopping 13 inclusions, ahead of Geelong Falcons (10). Greater Western Victoria (GWV) Rebels have eight representatives in the teams, while Bendigo Pioneers (seven), Murray Bushrangers (five) and Gippsland Power (four) complete the squads. The two Vic Country teams will be the Red and White sides.
From the Vic Metro tries, a few names to keep an eye on include Calder Cannons’ Sarah Grunden and Oakleigh Chargers’ Lara Hausegger, as well as AFLW Academy member Kiera Whiley for Team Blue. In Team Green, Carlton father-daughter prospect Sophie McKay, Western Jets duo Lou-Lou Field and Sierra Grieves, and Oakleigh Chargers key forward Emma McDonald give a look into next year’s draft.
Vic Country Red is headlined by AFLW Academy member Lila Keck, with fellow Academy member Bianca Lyne, draft bolter Lily Jordan and Geelong Falcons skipper Chloe Adams also in the side. For Team White, look out for the speed of GWV Rebels defender/midfielder Jessica Rentsch, Geelong Falcons bottom-ager Sara Howley and Dandenong Stingrays’ Mikayla Williamson, as well as bottom-age talls, Ash Centra and Millie Lang.
