AFLW 23 Under 23: #15 Abbey Dowrick
OVER the next three weeks, Rookie Me Central will be counting down our 23 Players Under 23 years of age to watch in the upcoming 2023 season. The criteria is the player must be born in 2001 or later, and must have played at least one AFL Women’s match in Season 7. As the list is completely subjective, the opinion is that of the individual author.
#15 Abbey Dowrick (Port Adelaide)
DOB: 23/09/2002
Height: 165cm
Position: Midfielder
Games: 10
Abbey Dowrick burst onto the scene as an older draftee for Port Adelaide, with the rising talent turning 20 last September. She has always been touted as a hugely regarded player at junior level, coming through the West Australian pathway where she represented the Under 18s team at just 15 years-old.
After electing not to head to the draft as a top-ager, Dowrick decided to hone her craft in the WAFL Women’s, where she represented Subiaco. Dominating there, she moved across to the SANFL Women’s where she donned the Eagles colours at Woodville-West Torrens.
It was enough for the teenager to earn a spot on an AFLW list for Season 7 with Port Adelaide entering the league. It also provided the competition with a unique sister rivalry, with older sibling McKenzie representing the Crows.

Dowrick had a memorable debut season, playing in all 10 games after making her debut in Round 1. Named at half-forward on debut, Dowrick wasted no time making her mark, racking up 21 disposals, seven marks, four tackles and six clearances, as well as a whopping 416 metres gained. She would go on to earn a Rising star nomination and be one of the most consistent midfielders throughout the season.
Her best game came in Round 4 against Sydney, when she collected 24 disposals and laid 14 tackles, while still having three clearances and 468 metres gained. Only dropping into single digit disposals twice, Dowrick made her presence felt throughout the course of the season, and it showed in the Rising Star voting where she received 32 votes behind teammate and winner Hannah Ewings (41).
LOOKING AHEAD
Dowrick might only be in her second season, but the soon-to-be 21-year-old is one who is set to make big ways for the Power. She showed she was up for the task in Season 7, and with further development and experience amongst such a new side, Dowrick will be able to add extra weapons to her bow in future. She is one of Port’s prime movers and will be crucial in the Power getting on top around the stoppages this season.
