AFLW 23 Under 23: #7 Hannah Ewings

OVER the next three weeks, Rookie Me Central will be counting down our 23 Players Under 23 years of age to watch in the upcoming 2023 season. The criteria is the player must be born in 2001 or later, and must have played at least one AFL Women’s match in Season 7. As the list is completely subjective, the opinion is that of the individual author.

#7 Hannah Ewings (Port Adelaide)

DOB: 17/03/2004
Height: 167cm
Position: Midfielder/Forward
Games: 10

Ewings burst onto the AFL Women’s scene in a way that surprised very few people who had seen her become a star of the SANFL Women’s competition. Taken by Port Adelaide with the first selection in the AFL Women’s Draft, Ewings played all 10 games in Season 7 and was rewarded with the Rising Star award. It went with her Breakthrough Player Award in the SANFL Women’s, as well as her dual Team of the Year honours, and All-Australian representation at the AFLW Under 18 Championships.

A damaging midfielder and forward, Ewings is strong overhead and at ground level, with a balance of offensive and defensive traits. She slotted into the team at the elite level easily and showed the potential she has at her disposal to develop into one of the best players in the competition over the coming years.

Ewings was consistent throughout the season producing some outstanding performances among her all-round solid efforts to finish with a disposal average of 13.9 per game. Mostly utilised on the inside, Ewings also won around four clearances per game to go with 3.7 inside 50s, and kicking four goals throughout the course of the season.

Ewings did not dip below 10 disposals all year with four games hitting that mark, but those four matches were her lowest time on ground. Once she slotted into the midfield and was able to hit more than 75 per cent time on ground, Ewings was able to win more of the ball and have an even greater impact.

Her Round 3 performance against Carlton – which featured 21 disposals, five clearances, four tackles three inside 50s and five rebound 50s – was the one that really caught the eye. Against North Melbourne in Round 8, Ewings also had 16 disposals – at an elite 81.3 per cent efficiency – as well as five clearances and seven inside 50s. A week later against St Kilda, Ewings backed it up with 17 touches, nine clearances, eight tackles and seven inside 50s.

LOOKING AHEAD

Once she settled into the on-ball rotation, Ewings became a dominant clearance winner and fans can expect more of that in Season 8 and beyond. She is capable of resting forward and kicking multiple goals, or driving the ball out of the middle through her power and booming kick. Ewings is one of the most promising second season players going around and will be one to watch this year.
