Injury blows RMC Medal race wide open

ROOKIE Me Central Medal leader Colby McKercher is under an injury cloud which may see him pipped at the post in this year’s count. Having been in the lead all season with best afield performances in all bar one game, the Tasmanian is now at risk of being overtaken in the final Coates Talent League round.

McKercher appeared to get his foot caught underneath a tackle in the Devils’ big win over Calder on Sunday and did not register a vote, leaving Gippsland forward Zane Duursma (three votes) to cut the lead to one after he bagged four goals in the Power’s loss to Oakleigh.

The Devils star now faces a nervous wait having had scans earlier in the week. Given he is likely to miss his side’s Round 17 clash with Dandenong, Duursma is in the box seat to pull off a Bradbury-like overtake. GWV’s George Stevens also stands a chance should he poll the maximum five votes.

Elsewhere among the top 10, Murray Bushrangers standout Darcy Wilson will hope to hang onto his podium position after another best afield effort. He’ll have his feet up with a bye in Round 17. Stevens (30 votes) again is the man poised to strike with another big game this week.

Oakleigh midfielder Jagga Smith moved into the top five this week, overtaking fellow bottom-ager Josh Smillie, who missed Eastern’s win over Geelong through injury. Christian Moraes also moved up the charts into seventh, while Tom Gross snuck into 10th behind GWV top-ager Lachlan Charleson.

While only three players remain in the running to take out this year’s medal, there will be 13 athletes in with a chance of claiming a top 10 spot across the last home-and-away weekend. Stay tuned as the RMC Medal winner is crowned next week.
