AFLW 2023 Round 6 Preview: Friday

  • Team
  • Western Bulldogs
  • Carlton

7:15pm
Whitten Oval

Recent Form

Both of these teams will be desperate to bag a much needed four points tonight. The Bulldogs will be looking for their first win of 2023, while Carlton will be looking to string two wins together for the first time in 2023.

History

As two original teams of the competition, there is certainly plenty of history between these two sides.

Tonight will be meeting number seven between these two sides, and both have won three each of the previous six meetings.

Key Stat Areas

These two sides play very different game styles, so the way the two styles clash will be interesting to watch. The Blues tend to handball the ball, while the Dogs tend to prefer to kick the ball more.

One key area that the Bulldogs will want to focus on tonight though is their inside 50 efficiency. While they have been getting more inside 50s than the Blues have this season, their inside 50 efficiency is 36.8% worse.

Key Match Up/s

Alice Edmonds vs Jess Good

They say it all starts in the middle, so it will be crucial to get a good start even from the ruck tap for both sides. One ruck who had a break out season last year versus one who is starting to live up to her name, it will be enthralling to see who comes out on top in this one on one battle.

Ellie Blackburn vs Mimi Hill

Blackburn is the absolute core to any success the Bulldogs might have in a game, so stopping her will be top of the priority list for the Bulldogs midfield. Hill has the strength to match it with Blackburn, but whether she plays a specific tagging role or not on the Bulldogs’ skipper remains to be seen.

Rylie Wilcox vs Amelia Velardo

One the likes of Blackburn and Hill have got the ball out of the middle, it then becomes crucial for the outside runners like Wilcox and Verlardo to step in and create that run into attack. These two are both crucial in setting up attacking play for their respective sides, so both will want the other to have a quiet game.
