2024 WAFLW Team of the Week: Round 6

EAST Fremantle lead the league for WAFL Women’s Team of the Week representatives for Round 6 with five, one more than the three other winning sides.

Claremont, South Fremantle and Swan Districts all still had four players each in the side, with Subiaco (three) and West Perth (two) the losers with multiple representatives.

The Round 6 captain is top-age Swan Districts talent Lily Paterson who continued her wonderful breakout season with 26 disposals, six marks, four tackles, three inside 50s and two goals in the Black Ducks’ win over Subiaco. She was joined in this week’s side by Swans’ skipper Eliza Gelmi, forward Courtney Zappara and defender Isabella Edgley.

East Fremantle had the most players this week and supplied the vice-captain for the side in the Sharks’ own captain, Ash Gomes. She amassed 27 disposals, two marks, three tackles and three inside 50s throughout her side’s 10-goal victory over Peel Thunder. Alongside her are fellow midfielders Sharon Wong and Amber Kinnane, with the former spending time forward this season and kicking two goals.

Forward Chloe Reilly kicked three in East Fremantle’s win, while ruck Laura Catherine‘s dominant performance in the ruck earned her the first choice spot for Round 6. Rounding out the on-ball group is South Fremantle’s Liusaidh Gilchrist, with Subiaco’s Hayley Corlett and West Perth’s Taylor Ferguson both filling out the specialist wing spots.

Along with Gilchrist, the Bulldogs had a further three representatives with that being AFLW-listed Tahleah Mulder, forward Shannyn Pomersbach and the versatile Madizen Wilkins. Ferguson was joined in the side by fellow Falcon Emily Bennett, while Corlett had Lions teammates Beatrice Devlyn and Krstel Petrevski for company.

Claremont was the other side to record four players in this week’s side with the top of the table Tigers having a strong presence once again. Defender Claire Ortlepp, forward Adele Arnup and midfielder Jayme Harken featured, as did young gun Eva O’Donnell who was named at half-forward.

The remaining two players in this week’s side were both at half-back, with bottom-age Rising Star Evie Cowcher and Royal defender Sabella Banks. They both had teammates as emergencies in Holly Britton (Peel Thunder) and Chloe Sauzier (East Perth), while Hope Ugle-Hayward (Swan Districts) was the third emergency.
