Ones to Watch: QAFLW – Round 7
BRISBANE Lions and Gold Coast Suns Academy players return to the QAFL Women’s in Round 7, promising some huge contests across the day today. With matches kicking off from 2pm, we take a look at a player from each side to watch.
ASPLEY HORNETS vs. COORPAROO
Saturday, June 1 @ 2pm
Graham Road
Lilu Hung (Aspley) returns to the match with the contested making over-ager set to provide an extra threat in attack for the Hornets. Hung has a high work rate and missed last year due to stress fractures, and will be keen to continue her promising form from the Coates Talent League into the QAFL Women’s starting with Coorparoo.
Chloe Gaunt (Coorparoo) showed promising signs at times for the Lions Academy, with the top-ager playing all four games through the Talent League. She booted two goals in one match and loomed as a marking threat inside 50, with the top-ager developing her overall craft.
YERONGA SOUTH BRISBANE vs. SOUTHPORT
Saturday, June 1 @ 2pm
Leyshon Park
Farrandai Hopkins (Yeronga South Brisbane) will see plenty of the ball from the back 50 and have a huge job in trying to quell some of the Southport forwards on the day. She provides run and carry and has a huge roosting kick which can clear the danger. Look for her to get aggressive down the field for the Devils.
Dekota Baron (Southport) is one of a number of Suns Academy stars who can do a lot of damage inside 50. She kicked six goals in her QAFLW debut back in Round 1, and has kicked 21 goals in six games this season between the Sharks and Suns Academy, with four or more in four of those.
BOND UNIVERSITY vs. UNIVERSITY OF QUEENSLAND
Saturday, June 1 @ 4:45pm
Bond University
Havana Harris (Bond University) is the standout amongst a stack of young guns from the Bull Sharks. Last year’s QAFLW Grand Final best on ground and AFLW Under 18s MVP, Harris is a pick one contender this year, and has the size, explosive speed and versatility to be virtually unstoppable, and the Red Lionesses will have their hands full.
Ashleigh Moyle (University of Queensland) had a quieter Coates Talent League stint, but also had others who stepped up and won the majority of the ball. Having talent and the ability to play on all three lines, the top-age 169cm utility remains one who can impact a game.
WILSTON GRANGE vs. MAROOCHYDORE
Saturday, June 1 @ 4:45pm
Hickey Park
Mia Geere (Wilston Grange) is a superb talent who is not eligible until the 2026 AFLW Draft. A tall midfielder/forward who can also play wing, she moves well and can break lines, but also has a booming kick. One with plenty of development to come, remember the name for future year, and will be crucial in this contest.
Monique Corrigan (Maroochydore) showed some terrific signs as a bottom-age ruck in the Coates Talent League and should use her height and athleticism to advantage. She does not need to win a lot of ball to influence the contest, and continued to develop throughout the last month.
