Queensland prospects return for QAFLW Round 13

AFTER a shock loss to the Allies the weekend prior, Queensland top Under 18s talent returned to the QAFL Women’s for the penultimate round of action. The competition played our Round 13 of the league over the weekend, with the final round of action coming next weekend ahead of the Maroons’ final match of the AFLW Under 18 Championships against Western Australia on August 3.

Southport 12.9 (81) defeated Coorparoo 1.0 (6)

A trio of bottom-age stars kicked multiple goals in Southport’s win over Coorparoo at Fankhauser Reserve. In an even effort across the board, all bar one Shark had 10 or more disposals, with Alannah Welsh (17 disposals, seven marks – two contested – two inside 50s and three goals), Sunny Lappin (11 disposals, three inside 50s and two goals) and Dekota Baron (10 disposals, four contested marks and two goals) all having big days.

In-form tall Georja Davies also controlled play through the ruck with an eye-catching performance of 15 disposals, three marks, 26 hitouts, four clearances and two inside 50s. Also in the match was Siobhan Ross who finished with 15 disposals, five marks – two contested – and four inside 50s in the 75-point thrashing.

Coorparoo’s sole Under 18s state representative for the match in tall Chloe Gaunt had a tough assignment but still kicked a goal from her four touches, two marks – one contested – eight hitouts and two tackles in the loss.

Bond University 12.11 (83) defeated Maroochydore 3.3 (21)

Pick one contender Havana Harris had an impressive day out for the Bull Sharks in the win, kicking two goals rotating between ruck and forward. She picked up 23 disposals, two clearances, eight hitouts, two inside 50s and slotted two majors, all while running at 73.9 per cent efficiency.

In the same game, top-age talent Nyalli Milne stepped up to showcase her aerial strength en route to 17 disposals, six marks – two contested – and two inside 50s. Mia Salisbury (14 disposals, four marks – one contested – three clearances, five tackles and two inside 50s) ran at 92.9 per cent efficiency, while bottom-age prospect Annabelle Foat (14 disposals, two marks and two tackles) was also handy.

Maroochydore’s twin towers in Monique Corrigan and Lilly Baker helped share the ruck load, finishing with a combined 18 disposals, four marks and 17 hitouts, while Corrigan also had three clearances and Baker laid six tackles and kicked a goal. Poppy Tindal had the second most touches for her side, finishing with 19 disposals, as well as seven tackles, three clearances and three inside 50s.

Yeronga South Brisbane 2.3 (15) lost to University of Queensland 5.14 (44)

While both have been stationed as defenders for the Queensland side, booming kicks Laura Roy and Farrandai Hopkins faced off in the midfield during University of Queensland’s win over Yeronga South Brisbane.

Roy had the last laugh and was phenomenal with 26 disposals, three marks, 10 clearances, seven tackles and six inside 50s, amassing the most touches touches on the field. Hopkins will held her own on-ball though, with 18 disposals, one mark, eight clearances, nine tackles and four inside 50s in a fantastic effort as one of only five Devils with double-digit disposals.

Aspley 7.10 (52) defeated Wilston Grange 3.2 (20)

Getting back on the winner’s list after a loss to Bond University last week, Aspley was able to prove too good for Wilston Grange in a vital victory. Among the higher production Hornets was over-age forward Lilu Hung who worked up to get 17 disposals, five marks – three contested – three tackles and kick a goal.

The match also marked the return of Isabella McDonough from a shoulder injury, recording eight disposals, two marks, one clearance, three tackles and four inside 50s in a solid return in the lead-up to national duties.

Back in the midfield after representing Queensland up forward, Zimra Hussain had the ball on a string for the Gorillas, notching up a game-high 31 disposals, while also taking four marks and recording two clearances and four inside 50s.
