EVERYTHING is to play for in the last round of the QAFL Women’s competition as five potential teams become four, and the door is ajar ever so slightly for a chance in the top two. All eyes will be on the race to the post-season series.
Luckily for sides such as Bond University and Southport who rely on a stack of State Academy members to complement quality experienced lineups, the two Shark sides will be able to regain those players when finals kick off on August 10. Queensland plays its final national championships game next Saturday, August 3, which the league took into account in allowing each of the potential finalists to be full-strength, injury permitting.
ROUND 14 FIXTURE
Southport (1st) vs. Yeronga South Brisbane (8th)
University of Queensland (5th) vs. Bond University (3rd)
Coorparoo (4th) vs. Aspley (1st)
Maroochydore (7th) vs. Wilston Grange (6th)
AFLW DRAFT PROSPECTS IN ACTION
In the top-against-bottom clash between Southport and Yeronga South Brisbane, it is ultimately a dead rubber game with a double chance and the wooden spoon locked in for the teams. The minor premiership is still up for grabs, though given the respective seasons, it is hard to see the winless Devils pushing the top of the table Sharks too much.
Watch for the likes of Dekota Baron, Alannah Welsh and Sunny Lappin to fill their boots to prepare for the trip west against the Sandgropers, while Georja Davies and Siobhan Ross are also in good form. For Devils, Farrandai Hopkins had a strong game through the middle last week and will look to back that up in the final round.
Bond Uni will be minus both of its AFLW Academy members with Tara Harrington (ankle) already out and Havana Harris out of the Round 14 clash against the Red Lionesses. Nyalli Milne and Skye White are both in though, and they come up against the in-form Laura Roy and developing tall Coco Garton.
In the top four clash between Coorparoo and Aspley, Chloe Gaunt looms as a key target for the Kings, while double bottom-ager Enah Desic is another to watch. For the Hornets, Isabella McDonough plays her second game back from a shoulder injury, with over-ager Lilu Hung having a good national carnival for the Hornets.
For Maroochydore and Wilston Grange’s final match of the season, ball-winning midfielder Zimra Hussain will look to finish on a high alongside Under 16s talent Mia Geere for the Gorillas. The Roos are minus four of their five Under 18s State Academy members, but still have Poppy Tindal who can do some damage.
