PREVIEW | Lambert-Pearce Medal 2024

TONIGHT is the of nights in the VFL Women’s competition, with the Lambert-Pearce Medal night set to take place in the heart of Melbourne tonight.

The pinnacle award of the evening is the VFLW Best and Fairest the Lambert-Pearce Medal, named after Victorian football pioneers Helen Lambert and Daisy Pearce, but there are a number of other awards being awarded tonight, including the Rising Star and the Rohenna Young Medal for leading goal kicker.

In a sign of how even the competition is becoming there are a number of different players from many of the different sides that could come away with the prestigious Best and Fairest medal tonight.

Premiers North Melbourne’s midfield was hard to stop at times this season, with the likes Maddie Di Cosmo, Audrey Rhodes and Alana Barba all playing big roles, so it will not be a surprise if those three are high in the vote count come the end of the evening.

Minor Premiers Williamstown also had a huge year, with several of their best players having big years, including the likes of Eliza Straford and Sharnie Whiting.

Ava Seton may have only joined the competition this year, but made an impact straight away, and continued to rack up the disposals week after week. Her team mate Lauren Caruso also had a big year, and showed incredible versatility throughout the season.

It will also be interesting to see if sides like Darebin can feature more at the top end of the votes after a much improved campaign. Competition leading goalkicker Monique DeMatteo had a huge year, so if any Falcon is going to be a contender tonight it will be her.

One of the other big awards that will be awarded tonight is the Team of the Year. The squad (listed below) was released a few weeks ago, with a final team to be announced tonight. Unsurprisingly the premiers lead the way in terms of number of squad members, with all clubs bar Geelong getting at least one player in the initial squad.
