Dockers grind out crucial victory over Saints

FREMANTLE Dockers continued their surge towards the top eight, defeating St Kilda by 11 points at RSEA Park in the AFL Women’s yesterday.

Speaking to the media post-game, Fremantle coach Lisa Webb was pleased with her side’s ability to grind out a gritty win away from home.

“Always nice to get one on the road, got another one in four days, we’ll certainly bag that,” Webb said. “At times it was challenging, navigating a few things  that happened during the game. Once again, really happy to grind it out.”

Webb spoke about the defensive grind to the end of the match, praising the defenders positioning well to set up the victory.

“I thought our backs set it up really well, they were really strong” Webb said.

“(Emma) O’Driscoll shone in her milestone game, really well supported down there by all of our backs I couldn’t pinpoint a couple of them, I thought they were really dominant.”

Webb also praised Ash Brazill‘s game, her work rate and her efforts on Jesse Wardlaw.

“She’s incredible, what she does,” Webb said “She said it to me a few weeks ago, you set me a task and I’ll be fiercely determined to get it done. Once again, she showed she can do it.

“She’s got great athleticism, great poise. We’re close in terms of two kids each  over here and spend bit of time talking about it. Any challenge I put to her, she gets it done. Once again, I thought she was really significant today.”

Another player who received praise from the coach was young forward Tunisha Kikoak.

“She’s a young kid, she’s 19,” Webb said. “I thought she did a really good job. She came off a shoulder a couple of weeks ago, kicked a couple of really important goals. “I thought she was really well supported down there by Ari (Ariana Hetherington) and Ebs (Ebony Antonio) as well. “Big steps for a young kid.”

Webb shared where her side has improved after five games.

“I think it’s playing together, it’s starting to build,” she said. “Having Ash Mac (Aisling McCarthy) and Gabby (O’Sullivan) come through the midfield it’s not easy at times, in terms of moving personal around. “We’ve had a few injuries like every team does. We’re just trying to gel and find the right mix. “That will be forever going through this season and continuing forward.

“We’ve shown that we’re a tough side and we can grind out wins like what we did. We’d like to continue to build and we’re going to have to continue to push for wins this season but one we’re up for.”
