Hornets sting Panthers to remain in finals hunt

ASPLEY Hornets have delivered Morningside Panthers’ first loss of the QAFL Women’s season with a 5.6 (36) to 2.7 (19) victory at Graham Road. The Hornets, who have been a mid-table team this season have now won four of their past five games to move to an even win-loss ledger of 5-5 for the 2025 season, while Morningside has now dropped to outright second with a 9-1 record.
Leading at each break despite being challenged, the Hornets came away with the 17-point win thanks to a plus-13 inside 50 differential that allowed the home side to rebound from losing the clearances, 24-31. Aspley controlled possession throughout the match and won both the contested and uncontested possession counts.
There was not much between the sides as they headed into the rooms at half-time with Aspley leading by a solitary point, but the difference came with accuracy in front of goal throughout the third term as the Hornets kicked 2.1 to 0.6 and took an eight-point lead ingot the last stanza. Kicking the only goal of the final term, Aspley pulled clear keeping the previously undefeated Panthers scoreless in the last.
Kaitlyn Day racked up 28 disposals, seven clearances, 10 inside 50s and booted 2.2 in a starring role for the Hornets, while Anna van de Wiel (26 disposals, four marks – all intercepts – and two inside 50s) was also a ball magnet. Jesse McMillan and Emma Pittman used the ball well in tricky conditions and finished with 20-plus touches, while goalkicking machine Jessica Stallard joined Day as the other multiple goalkicker with two majors from seven touches and four contested marks up forward.
Isabella Levine (25 disposals, 10 clearances, seven tackles and four inside 50s) finished with the most touches for the Panthers, while Laura Roy‘s scintillating season continued with 23 disposals, four marks, five tackles, three inside 50s and a goal. Bottom-age forward/midfielder Zoe Petrides gave the Allies selectors something to think about with 12 touches, five clearances, four tackles and four inside 50s in defeat.
